ATOT @ 11,000 ft.

Went to Yosemite for a week long camping trip. No electricity, no showers...it was a blast. 😉

I took my Rebel XT with me, attached my 28-135mm, and went to town. I hiked up to Gardisky Lake which, IIRC, is 11,XXX ft. The trail climbs just under 1000ft in just 1.3 miles....it kicked my ass. There was quite a bit of snow there and I couldn't resist. 😉

Beautiful pictures. I've been there twice and I love it. The ride there (from the coast) is fun, too.

BTW, the picture named Gardiskyake is not actually the lake. In the picture the lake is actually behind me and those are just a couple of smaller lakes that attach to Gardisky. Those mountains in the background though....just beautiful.

TOPO puts Gardisky Lake outside Yosemite... Elevation is 10,486 ft.

Anyways that looks like a big trout there - it looks like the biggest one I've ever seen in the Sierra. Then again its hard to tell size from that picture.

How were the bugs? With the heavy snowpack this spring I expect them to be out later than usual.

My backpacking season starts Aug 15th once I get out of summer school. First trip is probably going to be a Clouds Rest - Vogelsang - Toulumne loop. Then in late Aug or early Setp, im hopeing to do the Rae Lakes Loop in Kings Cayon (depends on timing and permit availablity), and if not probably a loop from Lyell Canyon over Donahue Pass, to Thousand Island, and then back into Tuolumne through Mono Pass. (Oops, I just realized that you didnt mention backpacking at all).

Gardisky is outside of the Park boundries, its technically in the Inyo N.F. Its on the Tioga Pass side of the park. The picture of the trout is actually at Saddlebag Lake which is below Gardisky. That particular fish is small for that lake considering they stock it.

My Uncle's uncle caught these while at Saddlebag. The biggest came to just under 3lbs IIRC.

The vampires were tolerable with bug spray and the flies were hardly noticable. I probably have a few dozen bites though even with "Off". Ive been backpacking before but when we go to Yosemite we go "car" camping with tents, etc. We always stay in Tuolumne and never go down to the Valley. We never hike anything that we can't finish in a day. There are some nice hikes just outside the pass and usually a 10-20 minute drive from Tuolumne Meadows.

I thought for sure Gardisky was 11 thousand something feet b/c I thought Saddlebag was 10,500 and Gardisky is at a higher elevation.

Cool 🙂 I'm going there about 2 week from now.. is there anything I should expect? Like weather, snow etc etc

What side are you coming up? Where are you staying?

We went up the Tioga Pass, a few patches of snow that every tourist stopped to f'around in on the side of the road. Almost all the other snow you have to hike to get to. Its pretty warm durning the day, not bad at night. I didn't even need my long underwear, just a couple layers at night. Bring plenty of "off" or "repel" as the vampires are out in full force. While we were there, a thunder storm came through. Make sure you have rain gear, etc.

EDIT: In 2 weeks, those patches on the side of the road will probably be gone..they seemed to get smaller just about every day.

Saddlebag is 10,069 ft according to the topographical maps.

Stocked fish explains the size..

Ah, that isn't much higher than the pass entrance. They don't stock anywhere inside the park...so if you want fish that you can eat...need to fish outside the park.
