Atom X5 gear up for pre-order

$136 shipped for the first X5-Z8300 desktop mini PC: (ships in September)

Meegoo has a history of being shady with Windows 8.1 licensing though, so it may be worth holding out for the Tronsmart model:

That one is due out later this month (earlier than the Meegoo!) & ships with Windows 10. No pricing or pre-order pages yet, but I like the design. Anxious to get my hands on an X7 model too, I want to see what kind of gaming it can handle!

I'm more interested in the Tronsmart, as the Meegoo looks like a hockey puck with minimal ports. The Amazon description says it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro; that's got to be a typo?

I would really love to pick up a box with a Core M inside, as the the M5Y10 is staring to make some waves in the Chinese tablet market. Regardless, the ATOM X5 or X7 would be a decent GPU upgrade over my BayTrail Zotac Pico, which already does a decent job with older and indie games. It also does a fine job with STEAM In-home streaming, even without QuickSync. I'm almost positive the new CherryTrail SOC's have QuickSync, so that alone should be a decent upgrade for those looking for a decent STEAM in-home streaming setup.

According to notebook check Z3735F does have quick sync:

P.S. Without h.264 decode, your streaming experience would have been terrible (I notice a night and day difference in games streamed with and without decode).

Some of the BayTrail SOC's support QuickSync, but the Z3735F does not.

The Z3735F will use Microsoft's DVXA video decoder, which is GPU accelerated, and found on most video cards and iGPUs. Surprisingly enough, it actually does a great job at decoding.

I have my GTX 780 encoding with it's NVFBC encoder and the DVXA doing the decoding, along with a wired 10/100 Ethernet connection - my frame/packet loss and input/video latency while using STEAM in-home steaming is very good.

I did see that comparison (which indicates info on Quick Sync is Not Available for Z3735F) before I wrote my post and I even checked this page as well:

http://ark.intel.com/products/80274/Intel-Atom-Processor-Z3735F-2M-Cache-up-to-1_83-GHz

No information on whether Quick Sync is supported or not (using Ark).

P.S. On some Intel ark pages like this one for G1620, Intel indicates that Quick Sync is not supported. But I have yet to see the same for Z3735F.

🙂 I did the same. Intel's not making it any easier on us. I actually have access to an inside Intel team, I'll ping them to see if I can get a answer directly from them.
