Which is why I prefer ATMs that require you remove your card before you can withdraw the money.

So you can't get your cash until you take your ATM card.

ive never seen an ATM that gives you your card back before it gives you money

All the ATMs at my bank do this. It's to help stupid people not leave their card in the machine.

You'd have to be some kind of special to forget your card in the machines that DON'T give you the card back until the transaction is over. I'm with Wachovia and every ATM of theirs that I've used has a ring of very bright flashing green LEDs to remind you get your card. Not to mention that it tells you on the screen, in addition to beeping at you.

its pretty easy to forget it when you are drunk

Alittle too anxious to get back to the stripper who promised to give you her number after a few more lap dances?

Well like another poster said, there's a lesson to be learned here: Don't drink and withdraw. :p

The "M" in ATM stands for Machine. (Automatic Teller Machine.) You don't need to say it twice. I can't believe ATOT hadn't latched onto that already :p

Shredded, wow... I wouldn't have guessed that. No wonder it BEEPS LOUDLY AT YOU.

Agreed. The ones I use around here give you the cash last and it's the best way to do it in my opinion.

There are a lot of ATMs in VA that just basically require a swipe of the card and you get it back immediately before the money.

Citbank machines that were linked with two atms and a phone made this an easy way to scam customers.

Most people here are thinking too locally on how their ATM's work and their methods of using them.

I pointed it out sarcastically in my post.

Just to be safe I would call & cancel it ... the bank should be able to issue you a temp ATM card on monday & you'll have a replacement in about a week.

Why would he cancel it? ATMs are designed to keep your card if you don't take it within a certain timeframe of completing the transaction. If it's an ATM that shreds the card, then he'll be issued a new card with the same exact account # on it. If the ATM doesn't shred it, then the bank will give it back to him during business hours.

I don't understand the worry of your card being in an ATM. It's safer there than in your wallet most likely.

Thats great if he's 100% sure the card was eaten by the ATM & not grabbed ... 99% or less & in my opinion calling to cancel it is a no-brainer considering either way he'll have to wait to get a replacement card in the mail ... whats the downside?

Me neither.

Many ATMs in my area now have a card reader similar to the swipe-reader used for debit cards in retail locations & never have your card inside them at all.

Old ATMs don't do taht but the new BoA ATMs I've seen installed near campus (sometime last semester) read checks on its own and read your handwriting so you don't evne have to enter teh amount (provided the handwriting is decently legible). They also eject your ATM card first before giving you your cash. That is how I NEVER forget my ATM card anymore. Oh and you have to hit fast cash.

I worked in a bank while going to school. If it was a bank customers card, we would call and give them 48hrs to pick up the card. noncustomer cards got shredded immedietly.

Nope, not the case at all in most (if not all) machines. It goes into a little box with the others.
