Welcome to the Atlas Obscura, a compendium of this age's wonders, curiosities, and esoterica. The Atlas Obscura is a collaborative project with the goal of cataloging all of the singular, eccentric, bizarre, fantastical, and strange out-of-the-way places that get left out of traditional travel guidebooks and are ignored by the average tourist. If you're looking for miniature cities, glass flowers, books bound in human skin, gigantic flaming holes in the ground, phallological museums, bone churches, balancing pagodas, or homes built entirely out of paper, the Atlas Obscura is where you'll find them.

Plan your next vacation here?

1 near me;

Marsh's Free Museum

Their main attraction is Jake the Alligator Man, the mummified half man, half alligator. You can easily spend the better part of an hour browsing their taxidermy collection, which includes a two-headed calf, a cycloptic lamb, a two-headed pig, and a shark. As well as a fully grown male lion and a big horned sheep. A real (or so they claim) shrunken head is also on display.

Grip the Raven - Interesting!

Once Charles Dickens's pet raven, upon its death Dickens had it professionally taxidermied and mounted. Grip even makes an appearance in Dickens's lesser known story "Barnaby Rudge."

That book was reviewed by then literary critic Edgar Allen Poe. Poe wrote that ?[the raven's] croaking might have been prophetically heard in the course of the drama.? It wasn't long after this that Poe published his breakout work "The Raven." The coincidence didn't escape notice and Poe was taunted with the refrain ?Here comes Poe with his Raven, like Barnaby Rudge, / Three fifths of him genius, two fifths sheer fudge.?
