Atlantis-like world found inside an Israeli cave

Text
"JERUSALEM - Israeli scientists say they have discovered a prehistoric ecosystem dating back millions of years.

The discovery was made in a cave near the central Israeli city of Ramle during rock drilling at a quarry. Scientists were called in and soon found eight previously unknown species of crustaceans and invertebrates similar to scorpions.

?Until now, eight species of animals were found in the cave, all of them unknown to science,? Hanan Dimantman, a biologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said Wednesday.

He said the cave?s ecosystem probably dates back around 5 million years, when the Mediterranean Sea covered parts of Israel.

The cave was completely sealed off from the world, including from water and nutrients seeping through rock crevices above. Scientists who discovered the cave believe it has been intact for millions of years.

?Every species we examined had no eyes, which means they lost their sight due to evolution,? said Dimantman. Samples of the animals discovered in the cave were sent for DNA tests, which found they were unique, he said. The cave has been closed off as scientists conduct a more detailed survey."

I love when we stumble across things like this, there are so many places in the world that we'll never discover, but it's exciting when we do.

I don't see why it would be called an Atlantis-like world though. I was thinking like an awesome high-tech city or something.

I know exactly what you mean....I wonder what kind of spectacular creatures and worlds man-kind will never see, but that exist nonetheless

This guy is a scientist? What an idiot. I'm sure the odds of people/animals sealed in a cave having babies with no eyes is much more likely than the odds of a previously unknown species that is subterranean having no eyes in the first place. /sarcasm

Fixed.

Wait..how is this an "Atlantis-like" world when Atlantis has never been discovered? Even if you make the comparison based on the myth of Atlantis it is still off.

QFT

Although I find it odd that these were turned all white when smitten considering God's favorite evil color is black.

yeah, i don't see why it would be called atlantis-like. are they saying atlanteans were crustaceans?

i do find this stuff interesting too though. its funny how we're always discovering news things but there are people out there who are dead set on how things are or that this or that doesn't exist. our civilization is relatively young if you really think about it. who knows what happened in the past.

While the claws do look like those of a Scorpion, the head & tail look more like that of a Crawdad

I'm suprised that they didn't find them swimming in drawn butter . . . .

hmm you are right.

but either way still neat =)
