So, in the same vein as my Milwaukee thread, I'll be in Atlanta from tomorrow through the 19th for the auto show.

First, for the car guys here, I'll get to sit in and take some pictures of the Challenger up close and personal...we have a few concepts at the show, but that should be the big one.

Now, back to me...I'm interested in any information on the city. What to eat, from the best fried chicken to the best jacket-only place. What to see, from the MLK Center to World of Coke. Where to listen to music, I'm really looking for a good jazz or blues place, whether it's smoke-filled or martini-soaked, it's all good.

I'm staying at the Hyatt Regency with no car, so please suggest things within walking distance, a <$10 cab ride or attainable via public transportation.

I'm also very happy to report that there's supposed to be a nice pool hall within half a mile of the hotel...I'll be there at least a few times throughout the week :D

Thanks all!

Well, there's not a lot of touristy things to do here, but I'll give it a shot.

These three are close to each other and you can do them in one day.
1. Georgia Aquarium
2. Coca Coca thingy (BE ADVISED DO NOT taste a drink called Beverly. You may deeply regret it. I could barely tolerate the stuff. One of my friends even threw up after trying it.
3. CNN Center tour (not bad, takes about an hour iirc). Right next to CNN Center is Centennial Olympic Park. It's not bad either. If you cross the street from CNN Center and go to the top of the CNN parking deck, you can take a nice picture of this and this.

Rent a car for a day. Public transport SUCKS in the ATL. Cabs aren't exactly cheap either.

4. You can also check out Stone Mountain. Google it to see what's there. I like going there after sunset.

5. Drive on Peachtree St from the downtown area to Buckhead. Along the way, count the number of streets named Peachtree that you cross. Get lost in the ensuing madness and end up cursing George P Burdell for making this suggestion. :D

6. You'll find good food on Peachtree. The closer you get to Buckhead, the better.

7. There's an irish pub in Buckhead called Fado's that I like (cold Guinness + cover band). YMMV. But there are several other places to drink and party in Buckhead. Another area for bars/restaurants is Virginia Highlands.

8. Despite what people say, you can pass on The Varsity.

9. If you drive on Ponce, you can find some interesting eating joints. Best to do this with a local.

10. You have to try this sandwich place.

11. Visit Tech and steal a T.

12. This place sometimes has good local music.

4. Love stone mt.

5. Thats just wrong, but count the number to bank of america ATMs you see if you choose this option.

6. great food, agreed

8. pass on Varsity, unless you like some food with your greese.

There's something I'd be interested in...haven't seen him in a while.

Thanks for the help all, I'll try to find out more about local shopping and live music.

I think I read somewhere that there are numerous farmers markets somewhere? Any of them near downtown? It'd be nice to pick up some fresh produce since we got a fridge for the room.

Yeppers, just got back from the Busch race and will be going to the Nextel cup race tomorrow. I'm not actually that big of a fan but my son is so it's what we do at least twice a year...if you go to the race take sunglasses, a hat, ear plugs, a cushion and an anti-redneck vaccination.... and give yourself about 4-5 hours to get from downtown to your seat :)

Actually lived downtown for a year or so but it's been a decade, so i wouldn't have a clue where to go now, and i never was much of a bar hopper.

Stone Mountain is worth the trip to see at least once in your lifetime so rent a car and go.
Still have not ventured to the Aquarium but have heard that it's great.
Lenox mall is ok but $$$
While your at the Coke museum you might as well check the underground mall next door, nothing special but unique.

Went to the aquarium, loved it...I'll probably start a flickr account soon. I hear that Lenox is nice, but I have a nicer one back home if it's your typical chain stores. I do want to check out Coke and the underground though...don't know if I'll have time.

Headed out right now.
