Atlanta people......recommend good places to live

iamme

Lifer
i have a friend who's going to be moving to ATL in a few months. he's 26 years old and wants to buy a house in the suburbs, maybe 20 minutes from the city.

any recommendations?

20 minutes? 20 minutes from where?

20 minutes during rush hour (that would have to be < 1 mile) or like 20 miles/non-rush hour 20 minutes?

the north side is one big friggin parking lot for half the day (6-9 am and 4-7 pm)

i'm not familiar with atlanta, so excuse my vaugeness. i mean mostly for nightlife and visiting.

i just found out he's working in Doraville, GA. so, something near there as well.

If he is willing to pay about 250K for a small 3 br 2 bath on a 1/4 lot, then he can do it. Otherwise, he needs to look at moving a bit farther out.

Buckhead/north Atlanta if he can afford it.

Further out if he can't, don't know where.

But look out for South Atlanta, he might get shot up.

he told me that he's looking to spend 250-300K. what are his options?

In all seriousness, if he will be working in Doraville then he has a lot of options. I don't know his budget, but let me suggest Roswell/Dunwoody/Sandy Springs. More expensive than most, but I liked it when I lived there. Also, Alpharetta if he wants to go farther North, but the traffic is crappy. Into Gwinnett you've got Lilburn, and Lawrenceville, and even Snellville. I don't really care for Norcross -- I found it to be too Industrial and not really my type of place.

There are some nice areas of Chamblee/Doraville, but he'll have to shop around a bit.

250-300 would do nicely in either area (they're adjacent).

The area around Northlake/Lavista might be of interest to him as well and is a short (by Atlanta standards) commute to Doraville.

Roswell/Sandy Springs/Dunwoody probably are not, but the rest should be. Fausto mentioned great places as well.

I lived in Lawrenceville for 4 years, quiet, but not really close to anything exciting. I'd say Roswell/Dunwoody/Sandy Springs if he's working in Doraville.

As a note, I worked pretty much in Doraville while I was there and the commute from Lawrenceville took me 20 minutes....if I went in late (I'm talking 10am here)....to an hour and a half during normal rush hour. This was for a 16 mile commute mind you. EDIT: the average commute was about 50 minutes.

What's your friend's life situation like right now? Kids? Single? What?

single male. 26 years old, likes to go out to clubs and whatnot.
He'll want to be closer intown then. The areas further out are nice if you have kids and such, but are pretty goddamn boring if you're young and single. I'd recommend he keep the Decatur area in mind or maybe Grant Park/East Atlanta if he's feeling adventurous. His commute would be longer, but he'd be less likely to go insane from boredom when not working.
