Atlanta Ford (GT500) vs Chevy (Lt1 Stingray) observations

I guess I never considered the Mustang in the same class as the Corvette. When i was looking at the 1LT Stingrays recently on Autotrader (new only) I noticed several being offered for $68K. This is actually MSRP, which surprised me they were not asking for premiums considering the slowness of inventory in the past year. So, knowing I would compare this to something not in the same class as the 'vette I chose to look at the Mustang. I know the Mustang usually competes with Camaro but I wondered on dealership pricing compared to MSRP. I noticed the closest in HP was the Mach 1 at $54L MSRP and with dealers asking for $3-5K premiums. You lose about 15HP over the vette but that may not be anything until you capre other facets.

But I was surprised that Ford dealers were asking for premium and and CHevy offering MSRP. And, btw, I went looking at Shelby GT500 price and dealers here want $16K premiums while having stock readily available. Am I missing something about the Ford culture?

No. It's just dealer pricing and regional price differences. You can go buy a GT500 or a Mach1 right now for MSRP. But a lot of people don't shop out of state or are willing to ship cars. So if you have a fairly low allocation vehicle like a GT500 then dealers can price gouge pretty easily. You see it ALL the time on forums when leasing or buying. Dealers in a large area give no discounts but someone could have went one state over and got 6-7% off a 70k car and paid $500 to ship it enclosed. Instead they just paid an extra 4-5k.

Special editions Mustang vs Fairly mainstream Corvette fresh off a major redesign?
Pricing is going to be all over the map and as mentioned, region comes into play.

Mustang competes with just about everything, from M3's to Hyundais. They are on the practical side of the 2 door spectrum.
Camaros...between the back seat and the glovebox for a trunk and the visibility issues seem to be less a Mustang competitor nowadays and more a really good niche vehicle for single people who also own another car.

A GT500 is a completely different animal.

Now that was a very entertaining video. And the departing remark about having to fill up the GT500 three times to drive home was something reminiscent of what Jeremy Clarkson said a few years back when he drove one in Europe.
