Hi all,

Long time lurker, (I think) first time poster.

Just bought a 9800 Pro (ATI branded) and ran ATITool to find what my max stock clock settings should be for core/mem. Well, it after running it for about an hour on memory, I found it to be 360. I ran core all night long, and found it to be 308. That's right, that's 70 less. than what's it's supposed to be at able to do just on stock default. The card should be able to do at LEAST 378 coming from ATI.

What's going on with this? I'm running latest Omega drivers. I thought ATITool as very accurate? If it is, does that mean I have a defective card?

Thanks!

Stock cooling on most 9800 pro's (that chintsy little aluminum cooler with 40mm fan) is craptastic, I wouldn't oc with just that little thing on there. See if you can find a vga silencer for 20$ somewhere.

Also, most people just run ATITool for 5 or 10 minutes, I guess if you run it for extended periods it can really heat up the card and cause artifacts. You can always try ocing the old fashioned way too. What games do you play? Pick a graphically intensive game like Far Cry or Doom3 and just keep bumping the core and mem 3 - 5 mhz at a time until you see artifacts, then drop the clocks back a bit.

Yeah, I know it's crappy. What I failed to mention is that this new 9800 Pro is in place to test due to an old one failing. I had an Arctic Silencer on it, but wanted to see what the difference was with a stock cooling one. Still even with the crappy stock HS + Fan, it should get the default clock settings, because that's what it's made to be able to do out of the factory, right?

I play City of Heroes and UT 2004. Could UT be used for the old fashioned way of OCing?

Thanks,
