ATI's MOBILITY? FIRE GL ? T2 or MOBILITY RADEON 9700

I am looking at IBM Thinkpad T42's and I can get either video card. I know the Fire GL is more for design and CAD, but if I'm not doing a lot of that stuff is this a bad card for me? Would it be really bad if I used it to play games? I'm not going to be playing many games on it since I don't think a Pentium M was made for gaming, but I just want to know how it compares to the Mobility Radeon 9700.

I didn't know IBM was offering the 9700 in the T-series yet, but ok.....

As far as raw GPU processing power, I believe the 9700 might be a generation newer core. But the cards are designed for two different things. If you won't do any CAD/workstation level 3D rendering, go with the 9700 for gaming capabilities.
As an analogy, compare a tow truck and a Ferrari. Both are very powerful, but in different ways. A tow truck can pull some heavy sh!t, but you would never use it to race. Just as you would never tow something with a Ferrari. But you could do both things with either car. The T2 is designed for 3D rendering, not gaming. Search AT and you'll find a good thread about the diff between consumer vid cards and enterprise level vid cards. GL

Don't get a FireGL if you're a gamer. The drivers are very limited, and you will definately encounter some issues, especially running newer games. Go for the mobility 9700. I don't see why you're not going for the mobility 9800; it looks like the best mobile graphics chipset ever released (by far).

Never had a problem with my FireGL (see sig) but whatever.

The Mobility T2 and Mobility 9700 are essentially the same chip - 4 pipes, 128-bit memory. I'll second the suggestion of the M9800 though, as that's a huge improvement over either. 😀

Mine gave me issues. I don't even remember what game it was at this point. The problem is that the last FireGL driver set was released in January AFAIK. You'll definately lose the newer features like GI and TAA.

The fact remains that the OP has absolutely no use for a FireGL card.
