ATi's counter: overclocked 5870, and "5990"

90% of users just leave their cards at stock settings. Hell 90% of reviews test card at their stock settings then overclock it and then run 1 or 2 benchmarks. There is a reason that the market for factory overclocked card exists and it's mainly for people who don't overclock it themselves (or they would just buy the regular card and overclock it). Stock performance matters more than maximum overclock performance.

I'm a bit late to this party but-

I typically will buy a factory overclocked card over a stock card. Only if the cost is perhaps 10-20 dollars more like in most cases for a bottom level Overclock. My thought is that the card itself is a bit higher binned. So I get a card that has been stress tested a bit more and better quality overall compared to a possible dud. Of course duds happen all the time with factory overclocked I'm just saying that it probably happens less than the stock ones.

AMD is probably saving the 5890 code for a new chip (like they did for the 4890, it's architecture is different from the rest of the 4800 chips). AMD is also probably smart to cap out the overclocks in the bios, that way nVidia doesn't know what the 5800's can overclock to (although this can be overcome by a modded bios).

Has anyone seen a 5970 overclocked to 5870 speeds? From what I've read, the 5870 has serious VRM overheating issues when overclocking to those speeds, causing it to crash, but AMD claims that it is able to.

Hopefully AMD will begin releasing the 5800's with unlocked bios for better overclocking experience =D

you don't need to buy a overclocked 5870 just take a regular 5870 and overclock it yourself. if this is true then gtx 480s don't seem to be that much faster. I heard rumors it's 20% faster but this only puts it 5-10%.

Sure you can overclock a normal 5870 but it will not be as good as a cherry picked 5870 that by nature will run at an even faster overclock.

You are totally right, look at the HD 4890, an HD 4870 only can only dream of reaching such high overclocks. A cherry picked HD 5870 will overclock great, but a redesigned RV870 aka HD 5890 stuff, would be a dream to overclock.

What's that ATI's lower power consumption that's real and measurable vs. 3D vision and PhysX no one programs for unless they are paid $$$? 🙄

I like your thinking process its much more rational than all the fan boys out there who seem to think enough SLI-3D-PhysX logos will equal better gaming performance.
