I think it's a great development for ATI. With OEM pressure, they might be forced to shorten their product development cycle and thus release newer products more often. They would also have more engineers working on the drivers for them, one of their biggest problems in recent times. Opening up the chips for sale by other companies did well for both 3dfx and nVidia, so hopefully ATI will have the same luck. It would be nice to shake up the graphics card industry a bit; it's getting a little stale in my opinion. The days with a four-way war between 3dfx, nVidia, ATI, and S3 were interesting, and the market developed faster then than it has been recently.
