Ati9800 or Nvidia FX5900 which one

Well the time has come to upgrade my GeForce 3 Ti200 but what should I get a Ati9800 Pro or the Nvidia FX5900 (128MB) card?

I was thinking the Leadtek A350 128MB FX5900 what about everyone else?

The 5900 128mb has only got a 128bit bus, i think, so the 9800 would be better.

That aint a thread. Thats an arguement! lol.
I would personally go for 9800pro. The 5900Ultra is about the same speed, so the 5900 will be slower, which`ll make it more expensive and slower than the 9800pro. But thats just me.

Im now a happy owner of a 9800 Non-pro. Have not installed it yet...but I'm happy! If I'm happy now I can't wait to see the sob in action.

The 5900 128MB has a 256bit memory bus.

To be honest, ever since the 9700pro , ATI won over a lot of fans. I am now one of them. The 9700 pro was really one hell of a piece of hardware. While ATI brought out its best, Nvidia was sucking wind after getting screwed over with the .13 micron process.

So even with the improvement of the 5800's and of course the 5900 Ultra monster, I'm still going to stick with ATI for now. ATI seems to have shown experience in how a video card should be made. Meaning 4x AA/AF won't kill the cards performance by half. ATI delivered performance to power hungry junkies like myself with a great product at a competitive price. Maybe when Nvidia creates something completely new over the cursed FX series, I'll might be obliged to rejoin their ranks.

Since both the 5900 Ultra and 9800 pro are equal in noticeable real life performance. I'm not saying I'm choosing ATI over hardware specs and graphs. ATI just won over a lot of faith with me with their stunning performance and stellar products.

you really should wait though, the performance of the 5900 would get better once more mature(not cheating) drivers show up, and ati is close to making their next release. so it's not too wise to buy a card at this time unless you really need one, but seeing since doom3 hasn't even come out yet, it's not too wise to buy a card just yet.

I don't imagine anything coming out of the wood work for the next 6-12 months that will make a major noticeable performance difference then the 9800 pro or 5900 ultra. ATI is planning on making a higher clocked 9800 pro that will increase framerate likely very little in the upcoming months but thats all I heard. With the half life 2 and DOOM 3 DX9 type games being both tested and reviewed on 9800's, why not?

I think video card manufactures pushed the .15 micron process to its limits to the point of overkill . The next step would be a smaller micron process that would allow higher clock frequencies. A step that may take more than a few months to fulfill.

I personally cant wait to see what the true next generation cards bring us (R420, NV40).
If the rumors about the NV40 are true then we are looking at one hell of card.
FYI, The rumor i was on about is the integrated 4mb on-chip cache. This will boost things no end. A La Flipper.
Just look at what the on-chip cache has done for the GCs Flipper Chip, its churning out graphics that people never thought it was possbile of. Some games even exceed the Xbox games, gfx wise.

X-Box uses a modded GF3 with 2 vertex shaders and a 700 MHz p3. I can't picture the hardware of a x-box doing any better then a top of the line PC system ?

Either way I heard the rumors about the next generation of graphic cards. I too am excited to see what they have to offer, more anticipated however on what games would be built because of the graphical enhancements. Open GL 2.0 and mature DX9 game coding? Grrrr.

but the xbox does not have to deal with alot of the stuff a pc has to deal with. it is just for games and games are written specifically for that hardware. this improves things a bit (graphics wise)

Exactely. Something that is used for one thing and one thing only, is better than an multi function device.
Oh and...The CPU in the X-Box aint technically a PIII-733. Its a "toned" down P3, it doesnt have as much L2 cache as a P3.

it is a celeron running 5.5x133. and the main reason the x-box generaly has better graphics is the fact that every one of them has dx8 level hardware and the same system specs all around, so the graphics are designed with that in mind.

Both cards win some and lose some. As for IQ, ATI does have a small edge but IMO is not really that noticable. I am personally getting the 5900 cause I prefer using the extra AA features that ATI lacks.

Just upgraded my old GeForce2 32mb GTS to a BFG Asylum 5900 Ultra at Fry's yesterday. Turned all the graphic features all the way up and running games at 1280x1024, everything runs smooth and looks great. I did notice the card heatsink get extremely hot after a while, but other than that everything looks great. To all the folks contemplating between 9800pro and 5900 Ultra, I think they're about equal with maybe +/- 5% difference on different benchmarks. Also consider buying them at a local merchant, that way if you're unsatisfied, you have an option of easy return/exchange.

If you are an enthusiast , hardcore gamer, or experienced computer guru, I'd say get the ATI 9800 Pro

If you are a beginner, not really guru, or just want fast gaming (can still be hardcore) then I recommend NVidia.

Get the 9800 Pro for sure. It's the fastest card out there and nVidia's latest drivers seem to be adding things to prevent cheat detection from working rather than actually improving things.
