ati2dvag infinite loop error

Hello everyone. I just got a new 9600XT and was hoping to enjoy higher fps in CS-Source but I can't seem to keep the system running for more than a couple min. before I get the BSoD with the ati2dvag infinite loop error. I was using a Geforce4 440 before with no issues like this. I uninstalled my drivers for the old card before putting the new one in. I installed the new drivers via the disc that it came with. Now I can barely do anything before I get the error. I searched on google and came across a few people that changed something (quoted below) so I did it. The comp is running without any errors now but since I did that and I check in my card display settings the AGP is set at off...have I lost most all the performance of the card by doing this and is there any other way to stop this problem?!?! Thanks guys!

****What I found on google****
Device Manager
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

Sometimes when switching vid cards, especially from nVidia to something else, old nVidia driver fragments are not deleted just by unistalling the nVidia driver. These driver fragmants can really cause problems.

Get a proggie, such as Driver Cleaner (free, just google it) which will clean out the old driver fragments.

Put you chipset AGP drivers back too.

You may also want to disable fast writes in your BIOS. I have heard of folks having problems with ATi cards and having fast writes enabled.

I did a quick google and was coming up with proggie things for dos...is there something else I should be looking for with it? Also, I did reformat hoping that would take care of it but the problem is still there. PCH I did notice that fast writes was enabled so I turned it off but it didn't stop the problem...

**edit: I just got driver cleaner and I will try that out when I get home

Looks like you may be using an old driver (you said you installed it off the disk that came with your card).

I'd try a newer driver.

I was thinking along those lines Fern so I dled the newest ATI driver and the newest omega driver to try out. Has anyone used the omega driver and have any issues (based off of catalyst 4.12b)?

I did post there with no response and fairly quick responses here...

the driver cleaner took out the rest of the nvidia stuff and I put in the newest driver and the beta driver but both came up with the same error. The only way I can get it to run is if I turn off the agp controller and then it makes the card upgrade worthless...anyone else have any ideas? Should I return this to newegg? Thanks for your patience, you guys are better here than in the video section!

From googling this, it looks like it could have something to do with the mobo rather than the card. You may seen those post too MLK3454 as I came across the "fix" you mention above.

Have you tried setting the AGP to 4x instead of 8x? And what mobo you got?

Yeah I have seen that some older mobos have some problems but I was hoping otherwise. I did try fooling with the agp settings but to no avail. I also took it out of this comp and tried it in my roommates (just built a new rig) and it worked great (better than his 9800 pro lol). So I guess I am SOL with this machine. I am going to build a new rig after new years so I guess I will save this card for that.
