ATI & XP SP3 = problems

Hi folks,

I have a ATI Radeon 1950X PRO graphic card and use two Monitors, one NEC2070NX and one NEC 73V. I never had any problems with any of these devices, until I reinstalled XP and upgraded to SP3 about a month back.
Since then, I have all kinds of problems. I would turn down PC in the evening, when I would turn it on again the next morning, there would be a "surprise" waiting on the desktop. Video settings would be all wrong. It would either have both monitors having the same signal (my 73V would not have "extended desktop", but same signal as the primary monitor, and Monitors tab would not be visible in Hardware Devices inside System) as well as having huge redraw problems, or the video settings would be set to 640x480px 4bit and XP would not allow me to use anything else.
With the first problem I usually uninstall everything ATI, ran DriverCleaner, then reinstall the ATI driver. This fixes everything. I again have Monitor tab in System, I am able to set both monitors to their correct setting and everything works ok overall. Only reinstalling the driver doesn't work.
With the second problem I just reinstall the driver over the existing driver and this enables me to make the fix.

Now, I do know how to fix the problems, but I'd like to make them go away. This happens at least once a week and it's getting really annoying.
Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? How to fix this?

TIA,
Mat

I had similar problems when Service Pack 3 was first released but ATI released drivers to fix tje SP3 problems.

Which ATI driver are you using?
Is the ATI Radeon 1950X PRO AGP or PCI Express?

Hi,

I have PCI-E version and am using driver version 8.561.0.0 with the date 1.12.2008 on XP PRO SP3.
I've dl it from ATI site about 2 weeks ago, so it's "fresh".

TIA,
Mat

thats strange, here with a X1950XTX, and XP SP3, i use Catalyst 8.12 without CCC, use Ati Tray Tools instead, and everything works fine.

Perhaps you should just roll back to SP2. I've had my own portion of problems with SP3( Automatic updates, services disabled, etc) and decided to remove it rather than re-install the Windows. It works fine ever since.

Btw, I may be wrong but SP3 seems to be prone on getting Trojans more than the previous pack. Personal experience though.

@Drivenbyvoltage: I've been thinking about that for a while now. Not just because of video problems, I get other problems as well, something that never happened with SP2. XP are loading a lot longer then before, I can't get Language Tab to remain hidden, when I connect to the dsl I have to wait for 20-30 second since everything freezes.. etc, etc.. I wonder if MS did this on purpose, to make us XP users switch to Vista?

@nemesismk2: I will. When it'll happen again, and it will happen again, I'll use just the driver, nothing else.

Thx all 4 your help,
Mat
