I just got the 7800GS to install. After running Aquamark on standard benchmark. I did have some troubles with Nvidia driver install. I ran the ATI benchmarks first since that was the card I was replacing. I ran the ATI removal tool off their site, shut down. Put 7800GS, tried latest drivers for MCE2005 off Nvidia's site and got a error stating could not find proper driver. Then I ran the driver install off the BFG disc and finally installed. The driver under device manager states driver : 8.1.9.8 12/10/05. Not sure if it was the MCE driver though but it did finish install without any errors. I am not a expert benchmark person, I am just a above average PC user that tried to compare Apples to Apples. Hopefully new drivers or other reviews will show the 7800GS outperforming since the 7800GS is what I am keeping for my new Media Center.

7800GS : Standard Benchmark at 1024x768 AA off AF 4x

GFX score: 9580
CPU score:8761

AquaMark score:61942

X850XT : Standard Benchmark at 1024x768 AA off AF 4x

GFX score: 10107
CPU score:8853

AquaMark score:64358

7800GS : 1280x1024 4xAA/8xAF (Pro Mode)

Average FPS : 52.5461

X850XT : 1280x1024 4xAA/8xAF (Pro Mode)

Average FPS : 59.3499

Nice, this is helpful.

Wanna run more benchmarks? 3dmark05/06, FEAR?

If the trend continues, hopefully we'll see the 7800gs lowered to $250!

do some game benchmarking. I wouldn't buy a 7800gs unless it can beat a X850XT PE easy because a X850XT PE can be bought for $250 and why would i pay $350 for 7800gs.

3.0 tut, 3.0.

That and doom3 engine games ;)

But granted, $350 is very much too much

Don't forget, you get XT PE performance from sapphire's 170$ GTO2 these days. Unless you are absolutely married to agp, that GS is gonna have to drop a lot in price to be tempting, SM 3.0 or not.

Looks like nVIDIA has officially launched the GeForce 7800 GS AGP. Here are some links to reviews by hardware sites:

It ran away with 95% of the benchmarks in this review. It only missed Far Cry on 2 settings, but not by much.

It even defeated the XT in FEAR, but the biggest difference was found in Half Life 2: Lost Coast

nV: 55.98
aTI: 31.91

Both OC'ed

That's only true when the GeForce 7800 GS is overclocked. When comparing the GeForce 7800 GS and Radeon X850 XT at stock speeds, the GeForce 7800 GS was often seen either performing similar or being slightly outperformed by the Radeon X850 XT, in many of the tests I did on both cards.

A few results, like Doom 3 and the HL2: Lost Coast Video Stress Test (on max settings with 4X AA / 16X AF applied) are some of the situations where I saw noticeable difference between the two cards at stock.

"With the Radeon X850 XTPE holding the top spot on AGP hardware up until now, NVIDIA hasn't had a solid high performance AGP showing since the power hungry 6800 Ultra. With prices on the aging high end 6 series parts absurdly high, it is quite nice to see an AGP 7 series part show up with good performance, lower power requirements, better features and a friendlier price tag at about $300. Even though the X850 XTPE is generally faster than the new NVIDIA part, the price tag is little steeper as well at about $400. This leaves ATI holding onto a claim for the fastest AGP solution out there, but the feature set of the 7 series part is a bit more refined than that of the venerable X850. ",
From AT's review, x850xt pe is faster in most of the cases at stock clocks.

it's really hard to hit 600mhz core . . . mine only does 550 . . . otoh, the vRAM o/c's to 614!

7800GS would be a terrible "upgrade" for me. . . . i'd like to see what ATi brings in AGP

mines a PE that could be why i can get my ram up ~620
I should have said most x850xt pe can reach 600mhz core.

i don't think many xt-pe's can hit 600Mhz core . . . stock is only 540core/590mem . . .

your's is an awesome o/c!

You know what, I just checked out AT's review of the 7800gs agp

meh.

It looks like it might perform on par with the X800XT. I suppose that's about right as the cheapest x800xt is $288, that I can find anyway.

AGP is looking pretty dark right now. It might be worth it to me to go to 939 in a few months after all, we'll see!

That said, either an x800xt or the 7800gs would be a giant leap over my 9800np!! The 6800gs would be too, at $75 less...

Man. So right now my choice would be $215-$290 for an agp card or $520 for a 939 upgrade w/7800gt. $250-300 isn't pennies :(

EDIT: just checked Tom's review out...the X850XT PE beats the 7800gs as much as in the at review and yet Tom's comes back and says: "The GeForce 7800GS definitely has serious horsepower and easily beats anything else in the AGP space." Sigh.

X850XT PE for $250?? where? If you are thinking Microcenter, that deal is off.
