ATI X850 details - expected in retail jan,2, 2005

i do NOT remember gfx cards EVER being that expensive.....if you spend $400 on the "Pro" (which alone is a chunk of money for ONE PC component) you feel like you buying the cheap low-end junk because you didnt get the one for $550 with 16 pipes etc.

I wonder how the 12 pipes Pro stacks up against the X800Pro right now perfromance wise...and, of course, NO IDEA whether these cards will have SM3.0 (probably not).

Still....kinda bizarre seeing them to release $550 cards knowing that R500 is to be released too in "early 2005".

I'll believe it when I see it...they didnt even meet the demand for the X800XT PE and they are already putting something else out?

i doubt they'll meet that january date...

but hey... i hope they keep churning these things out faster so it'll drop the price further on mid range cards 😀

Another vote for a X800PRO or 6600GT ~$150.😀

Release this card and hopefully it can happen!

WTH? More cards?
The X800XL 16pipeline, 400core/ 1000mem $350
Not sure how it'll fit into the line up though.

I like this part-

ATI claims that X850 XT Platinum edition will end up twenty per cent faster than Geforce 6800 Ultra in 3Dmark05, almost forty per cent faster in Far Cry and around 55 per cent faster in Unreal Tournament 2004. Those numbers come from ATI.

If it's true, no real need to sli 6800's. Ofcourse sli'ing x850's would be nice.

Yeah, and in January they'll no doubt be paper launching an X950NIS (Nowhere In Sight), X850XT's will be available for preorder at $750+ and X800XT PE's will still be few and far between not to mention way overpriced. Somebody at ATI needs a deep breath and a dose of reality.

It's really getting to be a freakin joke!

This man speaks the truth.

I don't think there will be any ATI cards with SM3.0 support untill R500 (when ATI redesignes the whole core?) I have a feeling R500 will put all other cards to shame (except maybe NV50's). X850's will have a paperlaunch.

i highlt doubt that this one will be a paper launch with sacred supply. That is one reason the price is sky high, in order to control demand.

I'm in line for the 850XT PCI-E; my XTPE has performed flawlessly in every game I've played, and I'm looking forward to a card for my NForce4 rig.

SLI seems cool, but looking at HardOCPs benches of two 6800GTs vs. one XTPE in Far Cry and HL2, the difference between the two isn't worth the extra $100 for the motherboard and $350 for the extra 6800GT.

The new "refresh cards" from ATi don't seem to bring much to the table. Mere 40/20 mhz increases on the core from X800XT/PE and 60mhz on the memory from 1120 on X800XTPE? For $550?

no thanks....

The only hope here is that ati refreshes and nvidia's refreshes will drive the prices of current cards down (but since ati has very limited supply of x800xts and x800pro sucks for price/performance), the only thing that is looking good is 6800Gt for $300 or lower (6800Ultras are hard to find and i doubt it'll be a good deal even if it came down to $400).

As always, refreshes bring very little to the table (unless the core is able to overclock better due to 0.11nm process). Also they should bring out 512mb cards and sell those at $550, so that prices on 256 mb cards come down and X800xt and 6800GT become available at $300-350

All I have to say is,

BUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I think there's a greater likelihood of an old fat man in a red suit popping out of my chimmney than ATI having these cards in retail stores on Jan 2.

Other things that are also more likely to happen:

1. Jessica and Ashley simpson invite me to a threesome
2. Publisher's Clearing House presents me with a check for $20 million dollars
3. Raiders win the AFC championship
4. Condelissa Rice appears on the next issue of Maxim

A few extra MHz over the X800XT Vapor Edition for "twenty per cent faster than Geforce 6800 Ultra in 3Dmark05, almost forty per cent faster in Far Cry"?

I find that very hard to believe, and if you really want one, I bet you got to wait for at least a full year to get it or pay a kidney on ebay for it.

My system plays all the latest games just fine with my lowley 9800 pro. I can think of much better things to buy with $500+, like more games! 🙂

well...of course there is no NEED for SLI....just wait for R5xx 🙂 I'll take a R5xx over any nvidia SLI solution any time

i am eager to spend $1300 - $1600 on the graphic cards.....where can i pre-order ? 🙂

i totally agree, with both statements. From what i "know" R5XX will be their first SM3.0 card...therefore, i already start to lose respect for ATI.....we dont need the tenth re-fresh of the SAME old chip-core.

their pricing is also totally whack (KNOWING that R500 will be released a few months after)..woul you want to spend $600 on such a card, especially if it STILL would not have SM3.0 ?

I would NOT.

agree with everything, A refresh of a refresh of a refresh. And WAYYYYY to expensive.

I've finally figured out why ati wants to charge 550 usd for the top of the line x850 xtpe, its because the yankee dollar is going downhill 😀
Back when the x800 was announced the american dollar was $1.40 up here in canada, now its $1.20. And since ati is a canadian company, a weak american dollar is bad for business.
