Hi there, I am just about to get my ATI Sapphire X800 XT non Platinum Edition card in the post soon. I wanted to ordered the Platinum Edition but it is so hard to find one, min delivery about two weeks or so. I want a card now as I have a buyer for my 9800XT and need a replacment ASAP (for half life 2).

I just want to know if the non Platinum Edition is overclockable to the Platinum Edition spec and if so how what software to use.

Hope you can help!!!!

Some XT's will overclock to PE speeds but nothing is guarenteed. An exaple would be a 6800 most 6800 GT's will overclock to Ultra speeds but mine won't. So most likely it will overclock to those speeds but you can't be sure.

And for software some people use ATI tool. Another option is Riva Tuner.

As you can see in my sig, I have my x800xt (visiontek) up a little beyond PE clock speeds. I have not gotten any artifacts at this speed, and I think the card could do more I just don't need it too. Oh I also have replaced the standard cooling with an ATI silencer 4, a great vid card cooler. It actually actively cools the memory chips and the gpu, not like the standard cooler that just does the gpu and gives a bit of air to the memory modules on the same side. (leaves the one in back to fend for themselves)

But like Computer Man said, overclocking is unpredictable. You may get a card that can't do anything over its stock speed or get a card that blows away a xt pe.

Why do you even need to OC a X800XT? And even if I needed to, I wouldn't risk it for fear of damaging such an expensive card

Why overclock an x800xt? Well why not, if I can keep the heat down it shouldn't effect its lifespan at all. I just measured the heat on my card after playing an hour of Far Cry, just over 50c. I don't remember what the old temp was with the stock cooler but it was very high. So if I am overclocking and keeping the temps below what the stock cooler was at, then there should be no problems at all.

Yes the card was expensive, and yes I will be out 465 dollars if it goes. But I just don't think it will and I am willing to take that risk.

I have the same Video card as you. I was wondering if you used the Nivida digital display to OC your card and what you used to test it.

Thank for the help so far guys. As to overclocking the card and reducing the life span, Well I renew my graphics card every year or sometimes sooner, so no issue there. Its not that the standard edition will be slow but I like to have the very best of what I can buy. Only this time it seems that the manufacturer has not produced to meet demand. I love ATI ever since I first owned the 9700 Pro and that was the beast in its day. But I want a card fast enough to run Half Life 2 in all its glory!!!!! Everything from AA to AF on full @ high rez. I have guys tell me that the 9800 XT that I own is all I need to run Half Life 2 with no issues. I tell them!!! Try running the game LOCKON AIR COMBAT SIMULATION by Ubi Soft with all settings on full inc AA & AF abd tell me that card is fast enough. It slows down to a 10 frame per second ZX spectum 48k game. I want the fastest card I can get hold of which @ the moment is the X800 XT PE but again stock is un-obtainable @ the moment.

Thanks 4 the replys and let me know if anyone has a Sapphire X800 that will run @ Platinum Edition speeds.......

Or how to modify it 2 meet the PE
