ATi X800 256MB vs Intel Ivy Brige GPU?

So building an ultra cheap rig and noticed my Opteron 180 w/x800 PCI-E will not play youtube in 1080p. So the CPU is going to 100% then the video starts to chop.

So this new build will consist of an Intel Pentium G2020, and a integrated GPU. It will have 8GB ram, so I will max out the shared memory.

No gaming, just DVD's, youtube, etc. Which video card is better?

Just curious, but why not a Haswell-based Pentium? It gives you some features Ivy's IGP doesn't.

Otherwise, pretty much what Ken_g6 wrote.

X800? That's so old I had to look it up! All modern onboard graphics should be better than a 10-year-old card.

Hey now, those came out when I was in university and I'm not that ol.... dear god when did that happen.

At any rate you are mostly correct, depending on the flavour of x800 (there were something like 6 back in the days of XT pro, GSO LE blah blah blah) it should be slightly faster to slightly slower than an HD4000 in raw power.

The HD graphics in the Pentium are some bit slower than an HD4000, but an x800 would not have driver support from the last 3 years, would support none of the current features, and would consume FAR more power.

Just stick with the integrated for a system like that. It will movie just fine :)

This was a $144 build that I am cobbing together with other parts I have laying around. On the cheap was the goal.

I will indeed build a i5 or Xenon haswell platform later this year for a $1000 goal.

I have an Ivy Celeron 1620 and I have had no problems with HD youtube video playback. It will definitely be faster than an old ATI x800. I still have an AGP x800XL which I'm scared to fire up, but yeah... just about any Ivy or Haswell IGP will be much faster in everyday use as well as gaming.

x800 have no support for youtube/flash acceleration and it's so old it can't even support DX9C (most DX9 games), better use the IGP.

I still have an X800XT PE that cost me $763 10 years ago. Back then it was a beast of a card but now you can buy 2 GTX 760 2GB for less than that. The HD4000 is gonna be a tad faster and supports DirectX 11 and the latest video acceleration.

If you wanted to build a retro Windows XP box the X800 would be viable. Don't sell it. You wouldn't get more than $10 for it anyways.

Yep, that's exactly why I am holding onto mine. In case I ever want to fire up my retro XP server. Also because the shipping costs would outweigh any potential profit from the card sale.
