ATI X300 mobile will it run Aero on Vista?

I have a chance to upgrade my laptop to a 128 meg x300 video card, but I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. Would this run Aero on Vista? I'm looking this up right now, but as I have to rush the answer any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm upgrading from an Intel 915 integrated so I don't have any choice in what I get, I can only get an x300 or stick with what I have, I just need to know if there's any point in doing this.

Cheers.

The 915 integrated will run Vista/Aero okay. The X300 will be marginally better, but the extra heat/battery drain might not be worth it. Are you already running Vista? I'd do the OS first, then see if you need/want an upgrade.

not running vista yet, but it seemed likely that I'd have to turn aero off. I suppose I also want to do some low level gaming as well. I currently can run any Pixel Shader 2.0 games on the Intel 915, despite the fact that it can run Pixel Shader 3.0 games very poorly (due to resource limitations). I was hoping that I could run something like battlefield 2 with everything turned down.

Might work out okay for that, 800x600 with low/medium details, shadows off. I think you can also get a Geforce Go 7800 for that notebook as well, check ebay.

sadly I have to replace the motherboard as well to do this. I was told the only mobo available will allow an x300 tops. I've been looking into this thing and found that it'll run doom at 5 fps, which isn't even worth thinking about. I think I'm going to have to let this thing rot at the Intel 915. I hate it when your laptop becomes a paper weight.
Thanks for your help arkaign. 🙂

Damn, well hey, there's a good market out there for used notebooks! You could do what a friend of mine did, he put a for-sale sign on the back of it, and whenever he was out at Starbucks, etc, people would ask him about it. He sold it in like two days I think, for a good price. Then you could take your $$ and put it towards a decent notebook. If you got $600 or so, then you could pick something like this up for not much more :

Awesome 17" Widescreen, DVD Multiburner, Geforce Go 6600 128MB PCI-e, etc
