ATI X2600XT, video card and 64bit Windows run the other direction

So I got my X2600XT today to replace an old x1800XL, installed it and all was fine Video works, but when I tried to install drivers for the on board "High Definition Audio Bus", I get no drivers found. This is the same audio solution as the 2900XT so its been around for 3 driver revisions now, so why are no audio driver found! First since this card is for an HTPC I figured sub-par video performance was ok, but then to find that the built in audio solution has no drivers now I was mad.

After a bit of searching I located drivers for the Audio, but only at Realteks site (not on AMD's site). Now if a device (say an MB), as a feature then the manufacture provides drivers for what ever is built on. In the case of Sapphire and AMD this is not the case. First the manual (small that it is) that comes with the card does not talk about an audio driver anywhere, second the CDROM that comes with it does not include the required RtHDMIX.sys for Windows 64bit. On the Vista side vista finds the Audio part of the card as being realtek and then installs a driver (but this driver is missing the RtHDMIV.sys so it does not work either). Bottom line is that AMD needs to include documentation about how to setup the Audio built on all x2000 series card better and also provide a download for said driver. By the way the driver is called: HDMI_R168.exe

Now this card crashes all the time (say within 5 minutes of starting Windows XP x64 SP1). The problem occurs using purevideo MPEG2 decoders, PowerDVD 7.3 build 2911 and just performing simple explorer operations (such as copy). I thought this was due to bad hardware so I brought it into work and went to town on it in my LAB (I tested the card with the following OSes: Linux, XP, XP x64, and Vista) here is what I found:
Usng the 7.6 version of the drivers (the latest available).
Linux: there are no drivers and it was not recognized
XP: Seems to work fine (PowerDVD aceleration seems to work).
Vista: Seems to work fine (PowerDVD aceleration seems to work), MPEG2 acceleration using purevideo is broken though (know issue I think).
XP x64: crashes same as I saw at home.
(Note all 4 systems are teh same 2GB ram intel 965, core 2 duo only the OS changes).

Conclusion the x64 drivers are bad, well completely broken (they seem to be feature complete), but since I've only managed 5 minutes before a video crash I could not even test acceleration. Since 2 separate systems show the exact same problems and since 2 other OSes work fine, the problem seems to be driver related. I'm interested if anyone else has seen similar issues with this card?

In conclusion: Its kind of a mute point as if I wait on a set of 7.7 driver I will be unable to return the card, so I will have to accept that it will cost me nearly $40 dollars by the time I'm done and return the card. However I personally am much upset that AMD seems to have neglected to ship a functional and stable 64bit driver for the card, at least when the Linux driver is not ready they simply do not list it as a download option, however for x64 they have a download that appears to be completely unusable.

Always an experience testing new hardware,
ERIC

If I'm not mistaken, the X2xxx series DO NOT have onboard Audio chips. Just some sort of "pass-thru". So, if you are looking to get sound out of your graphics card (if I am understanding this correctly) you are out of luck.

About the power saving: Not sure what that is about, maybe somebody else could chime in.

Does Nvidia's pure video decoder work with ATI graphics cards? Why not use ATI's AVIVO? What I'm really asking is, does NV's Pure Video work with any graphics card from a software standpoint? Or does it require hardware in the GPU to utilize it correctly?

it sounds like you don't know exactly what you are doing

are you using the drivers off the CD?

just return the card ... the GTS is a much more powerful and expensive card
-and don't worry about the retailer ... they don't lose a thing

egandt - I'd have the same questions as keys. I kind of thought of Purevideo and AVIVO as hardware + software decoder combinations. Here is a reference article on Purevideo and AVIVO from Tom's Hardware Guide: Link. What do you mean when you say that you are using Purevideo?

On the sound issue, here is what AT's review of the HD2400/2600 said:

"The higher end cards will come with an HDMI converter that includes sound, but AMD has given board partners the ability to chose whether or not to include this with lower end parts (even though all the boards will support the feature). " I wasn't aware that there was another on-GPU "high definition audio bus." Did your x1800xl have such an audio bus? Were you able to route sound through it?

So, there are a couple of things I'd check out. First, find out if your card actually has the HDMI converter that includes sound. Second, I'd go to ATI's website and download their latest drivers, regardless of the drivers that have come on the CD with your card. With such new parts, even the drivers on the CD may not have the latest patches & fixes, etc. You can uninstall your current driver, use Driver Cleaner if you prefer, and reinstall the latest Catalyst drivers.

Truthfully, I'm not completely sure what can be done about the power saving issue. It is possible that you simply have a bad card. It's also possible that the drivers haven't been installed correctly.

Cheers and good luck.

well one of the selling points of R600 and its derivatives was the ability to process audio. im not sure if this was a pass thru where it applied post process effects or whether it basically replaces your sound card, i.e. two solutions in one.

so far, i have heard nothing about this audio processing ability for any of the R600 based boards, so the first question is... does it actually exist? does it work? is it another "whoops the PVP on the 6800's is bust"?

Errr. This is a somewhat odd post.

So I got my X2600XT today to replace an old x1800XL

Isn't an X2600XT a downgrade from an X1800XL? Or at least a sidestep.

Update 120minutes later: System crash when watching Video using Nvidia's Pure Video decoder

Eh? Coulda sworn you said X2600XT. Which would be an ATI card. o_O

otis - I think they were speaking of HDMI audio support, which all the cards have. Unfortunately, in their infinite wisdom (and I'm being sarcastic here), ATI left it up to board partners whether or not to include the actual HDMI audio converter for some of their 'low end' parts.

So there are really a couple of questions. Is this what was meant by 'audio processing' in the R600? Does the 2600XT that egandt has purchased have this converter?

I honestly don't know the answer, but I was trying to clarify some of the questions for egandt.

Sounds like a ill constructed jab at ATI. By the way, I don't understand why topic titles like these are allowed? For cyring out loud, he's trying to use nvidia's pure video instead of ATI's AVIVO, on a fairly new OS, that's 64bit and has reported problems with both ATI and NVIDIA.

i don't know ... as i said he sounds pretty clueless - because he just wanted to RANT ... not fix the problem

if he asked for help it would be a completely different story

that's why i think nvidia is for him ... he will buy a card that is 3 times more expensive ... and then complain he can't get it working with CCC and that nvidia is stupid

is there a reason i should not lock it?

I'd like to hear from the OP. I would want to hear what he has to say about our comments. But, if he doesn't turn up, I'd say lock it.

The 7.6 drivers cause my rig to stutter horribly and then BSOD when the AVIVO deinterlacing/scaling features of the HD2900XT are used--as in MPEG2 playback. By contrast, the 7.5 drivers just do massive smearing and artifacting (except for the "Bob" setting) without the stuttering and BSOD's. This was the case on two different setups (i.e. different CPU, mobo, RAM).

So for now I would use the 7.5 drivers w/ AVIVO Quality set to "Bob" although I personally found image quality to be inferior to my 7900 GTO on stock Vista MCE settings/decoders. Or you could do a test install of XP on a clean partition w/ 7.6 drivers to see if it's a driver or hardware issue. IIRC, the 7.6 driver's video playback worked fine for me on XP 32-bit.

The HD2600xt gpu completely (for the most part) removes vc1 & h264 (HD-DVD) processing off the cpu. The OP has a problem with a 64-bit driver. The SAPPHIRE 100208L Radeon HD 2600XT promotes HDMI with 5.1 surround sound audio thru a DVI to HDMI Adapter.

I'm not aware of the hardware, mod or workaround that allows 5.1 surround sound to be passed thru a vid card DVI connector, to a DVI to HDMI Adapter and then to an HDMI cable. :) Maybe somebody dreamed up a way to port surround sound thru the Analog pins on the DVI connector. You'd think we'd hear something about that . . . .

I think the Sapphire marketing department needs to talk with the Sapphire engineers.

And I think that the OP needs to enable the audio on his mobo and forget about the driver until a manufacturer puts a HDMI connector on the back of the card

You do realize the HDMI connector has 19 pins and a DVI has 29 pins? And that the audio data is carried on the TDMS channel for which all the pins appear on both connectors? I suspect the harder part is figuring out how to transmit the CEC / side band signals.
