Hey all,

I need to ditch my 6800GT because it's basically useless in Vista. Apart from display corruption at the welcome screen and with UAC, games have started crashing. It either bsod's or I lose video for a bit, then it comes back and says "display driver has recovered from a serious error" or something.

So, I need to get a different videocard. I'm thinking of the $155 ATI x1950 GT deal at zipzoomfly. However, I hesitate to get a dx9 card just before the midrange dx10 cards are supposed to come out. I'm looking for opinions on this one.... should I spring for the x1950GT now, or wait for the likes of the 8600Ultra (and hope nvidia's drivers suck less)?

I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks for looking.

Dave

Edit: I've got both pci-e and agp, since I'm using an Asrock 775dual-VSTA motherboard. I'm going to get a pci-e videocard, since agp is basically dead.

Don't know if this helps but...

We're waiting to upgrade the X850XT in our backup, till we upgrade the X1950XT in our main

I want to see what shakes out over the next few months. We're not installing Vista till SP1 anyway, so theres no hurry here.

if you'd want to keep vista, i would go with anything ATI. i have nvidia and vista and the drivers are buggy. i finally got stability with nvidia vista Version: 100.65. the newer ones gives me errors like "video card recorering from serious error" and such.

i would try using the Version: 100.65 drivers first if you already.

Wow. I just put the 6800GT in my 2nd system to see if WinXP would improve things. However, I've already had one 0x0000008e bsod from the desktop, and some icons don't even render. Every other boot shows display corruption before windows.... I'm guessing the card is just shot, even though I've RMA'd the damn thing a month ago. Could insufficient psu be causing display corruption? That's the only problem with my 2nd rig - 350w antec power supply. If that isn't it, the card is definitely bad, in which case I need a new card now. I can't limp along on the old 9600pro for long.

I know if it was me and i upgraded to a dx9 card id regret it forever n ever... Just like i did with when i got my nForce 3 motherboard and didnt decide to wait for another month for NF4 to come out to get the PCI_E bus instead of the AGP.... Still pissed at myself at this day for that stupid decision... Now I gotta upgrade every component on my system to go to PCI-E... i guess its about time anyways
