Hi, i recently purchased an ATI x1950 gt pci-e card (made by peak, with 512mb ddr3) for my brother. he had recently upgraded his sytem with a new mainboard and cpu (an amd x2 3600 on an asrock mb), all components installed on the same day so we havent had the chance to single out any component that may influence the problems we are getting. it was for his b'day and thus doubly frustrating for me.
the problem we get is when we start up WoW, at the log-in screen the graphics tear and the vpu (?) recovery program kicks in to send an error report. on the log-in screen as the graphics show artifacts and tearing, the game locks up and kicks me back to the desktop. from what i could gather it has to do with the catalyst control centre, atleast that is what is taken up in the error report (relation to ccc.exe).
i tried the latest drivers (7.4) and the latest omega drivers (3.8...) but these did not help.
my initial thoughts go out to a faulty card but will try later on today with another card to see if that makes a difference.
what i am unsure of is that maybe other components may be contributing to this, possibly the power supply? its rated at 400W but maybe not the right specs as its not a branded make. i have yet to test another game to stress the card apart from dxdiag (which the system passes the direct3d tests) and will do once i get home tonight.
tonight will test the setup with:
- running 3dmark (havent tested anything as of yet to stress the card apart from WoW which failed at the log-in screen)
- another video card
my questions are:
- can tearing and artifacts which end up in lock-ups be an issue from the power supply?
- if anyone had similar experiences when upgrading to a similar card? also with WoW in particular..
- if anyone has suggestions as to what to try to narrow down the contributing factors
thanks in advance
