ATI x1900xt

I have an nvidia 7600GT, and I am am thinking about getting this ATI x1900XT with Fatal1ty cooler:

I think I can get it for under $20.

Do you think for $20, it is a good upgrade from the 7600GT?

lol, what year is this? yes that would be a faster card but both the 7600gt and x1900xt are outdated and pretty slow for modern games.

Unless you're on a REALLY tight budget, I'd personally spend an extra $40-50 and pick up an HD 5670, used 8800 GT / 9800 GT, used HD 4850, or even a 9600 GSO.

Well, he didn't say anything about modern games. That said, I'd look for some after mail in rebate deals. Sometimes they come out to 20-30 and would give you a better card. That said:

I have owned both cards. The x1900xt is twice as fast as the 7600gt. It's also about the same speed as a modern-day 4650 or 5550. In that regard, an x1900xt for $20 isn't a bad deal, as the 5550 is about $60, but the x1900xt will use much more power than a 5550 and offer none of the HTPC features that the 5550 does.

You can, however, get a 4650 for $35AR here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102829. It might be a better choice in the long-term, especially given that AMD no longer supports the x1900xt in current drivers.

well he mentioned nothing at all so why else would he want to upgrade the graphics card??? if it was something other than gaming than surely he would have mentioned that.

Well, that's the only problem with budget cards... DDR2 all over the place. You'd think they would have ditched that crap by now. Isn't it pretty expensive to manufacture?

I upgraded from 7600gt to x1900xt...back in 2007. As stated, you're much better off just getting a newer, low power card now. If you check deals and can life with rebates especially. Alternatively, go for an 8800gt, 4850, or the like on ebay, should be $40-60 but at least offer modern card performance.

I owned that too - twice as fast as x1900xt, so four times as fast as 7600gt.

We can assume the OP has an old system - spending over $50 on a video card most definitely won't make any sense in his case. But $45 for an 8800gt will give him a ton more power than he'll ever need, and while over twice what he wanted to spend, it's still relatively inexpensive.

OP may not be an accomplished baker.
I did a similar upgrade, from x800xt to an x1950xt, and it gave me about double the fps in most games.

x1900xt is a bit of a powerhog, though.

heavily depends on what OP is running, specifically psu and card slot type, then cpu.

I assume you're referring to the fact that the 8800gt is prone to failing. The one I found in the For Sale forum has an EVGA lifetime warranty, but I'm not sure if that transfers to new owners.

I'd still say it's probably best for the OP to get a new card than a used one, for power savings and lower noise. The 4650 is still available for $35AR.

The upgrade is only because I have an extra $25 I could throw into my computer, which is old but it's all I have and I want to play Quake on it and I heard that a x1900 could handle it and I think I can pick up this used one cheep.

This could hold me over for 6 months or so, till I save up to get a new mobo/cpu and one of the cards y'all mentioned.

Do you have a fast cpu to handle that card? i think it needs much more power to run it also compared to a 7600gt.

What is you cpu and power supply specs?
If your computer can handle the 1900xt it would be a great upgrade for ya for 25 bucks.

is it sad then that I still own this very same card x1900xt? That said, it is quite powerful, I have played dead space and battlefield 2 with quake 4, and quake wars, left 4 dead 1, and mass effect 1 on it, with 1280x1024 on medium settings with 4gb ram and Q6600 processor (no overclock) windows vista.

x1900xt isn't a terrible card by any means, but it is certainly very long in the tooth. I bought one about 4 years ago to replace my 7600 gt. Since then I've gone 3870-4850-gtx 260, gtx 460-768, with an extra gtx 260 and 9600 gso thrown in for extra rigs here and there. Man, I've got a problem...
