Few years ago late 2006 I bought a laptop with the x1700 mobile raedon graphics card and it served fine for the few games I played on it, mainly WoW back then. I couldn't run maxed out video settings, but it got the job decently. Although earlier last year I would notice that when playing I'd be getting my ~25 frames/sec then experience severe slow down, like 2FPS, without anything really changing on the screen (just looking at a few chars running around).

Jump forward to today, I still use the laptop but hardly do anything other than surf the web... Until yesterday when my friend gave me a beta key for the "Heroes of Newerth" game. So I fire it up, the main menu screens seem to be running fine at 1024x768 with mediocre settings and its running smooth. Then the same things happens, I'll run for periods of ~45 sec then experience severe loss of FPS for ~5-10 seconds no matter if the content on the screen is intense GPU wise or not.

Needless to say this was/is quite annoying, I have the latest catalyst drivers, although ati treats the x1700 like a bastard child and doesnt even list it on their website as a supported card.

I've also noticed that the computer runs verrrry hot, too hot to touch, when playing this game; could it be possible that the CPU/GPU is being throttled back due to heat during those times? I have a laptop cooler fan underneath, but it doesnt seem to be working well enough if its getting this hot.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions welcomed.

Even before I finished reading your post, the first thing that came to my mind was overheating. Check that the hot air for the cpu is exhausted well. Sometimes dust builds up on the heatsink inside the laptop too. Since your laptop i probably out of warranty, you may want to take it apart and inspect it.

Well that was exactly it, I popped open the bottom of the laptop and propped it up so there was good airflow and had 0 performance issues and noticed quiet noticeable decrease in temperature. Everything looks clean and the fan is spinning at speed (I think). Think this is just too much for my aging computer to handle? or should I look for a new heat pipe / fan?
