ATI X1600 PRO or PNY VG 7600 GS graphics card

I have an older 1.8 P4 with 4X AGP, 512 ram, 400 FSB. My video card is going, it is a geforceMX400 64MB. I am looking at either of these cards, both about the same price. Are these "TOO GOOD" for my computer? In other words, am I paying for more than I will actually get out of it? Should I look at something like a radeon 9550, X1300 pro, GEforce 6200 OC or the 7800, all 256MB cards. Any advice is appreciated.

I would look at this X850pro 256mb AGP card.

I would generally agree except that you really *should* reformat when switching from nVidia to ATi and vice versa. I know many will say it's not necessary, but it seems that many people have problems when they don't. I would really suggest a 6600gt AGP as well.

Unless the OP doesn't game at all, and then it only makes sense to get something like an FX-5-series model. I can't believe I just said that... 😕

eVGA 6600GT AGP for 95.99 @ Newegg.com

But like I said before, if this card won't be used for games at all you might as well just get the cheapest card for AGP that you can find. The FX5200 comes to mind...garbage for gaming but shouldn't cost more than $20 on some sites.

I just noticed that Best Buy will be featuring the ATI X1600 PRO 512MB for $99 on Black Friday. It may be overkill for your purpose but it seems like a good deal to me.

I was thinking of getting one now and using their 30-day price match when it goes on sale but I see that the stores aren't stocking it now.
