Bah- I swore I would never buy another ATI card again...But an AMD card?? It's still like ATI but not really ATI. I guess I can stick to my principles and still buy a great(AMD) video card.:)

Do you think AMD will actually honor their mail in rebates on the Radeon series?

You guys can no longer say fanATIc, or red vs green, as AMD is green too ;)

Most of the buyers don't know what those words mean anyway, they just know it's something else that they get in the box. If they market it well (which I know we are talking about AMD and ATI here) they might come out ok. I would think this would work better for the low end laptop or entry level pc market integrated video packages. For the higher end they could push the Radeon badge as a particular combination of cpu, gpu, and perhaps when the time comes, vpu. It could be a badge package aimed at the gamer section without much chance of losses. Because they are all separate parts they don't have to be sold together. However, to have the Radeon badge they would all have to be present. Anyway just my $.02

AMD Live! is their answer to Viiv.
Except it's new and it's AMD which = no marketing.
But then again, I haven't seen much about Viiv either, most stuff still seems to be Centrino.

I wasn't trying to say that I believe that AMD could compete with Intel's branding, just that it was an interesting idea. AMD Live! and Viiv are more aimed at HTPC. I was talking about a branding for just the cpu and gpu colectively for the low end and perhaps a high end with an added vpu.

I think it would be a good idea to spring on the buying public start to get them thinking of the cpu along with the video. With the way AMD is looking to structure CPU/GPU communication it would make sense to have a one word badge catch phrase to throw out there that comfortaly talks about both the cpu/gpu as a whole. The less tech talk the better for the buyer.

i'd put this to rumour at best....mostly because AMD is completely unknown as a GPU manufacturer. they are only getting started as a well-known manufacturer of CPUs. killing the ATi brand would mean that they have to invest in millions to re-educate the general public.

Seriously though, this is either one stupid move or one smart move...

Sig material right there, this could have been an Einstein quote LOL :p

Now.. I agree that AMD will probably bring alot more popularity to Radeon cards, since dispite Ati having some of the best cards ever, they dont get nowhere near the recognition they should because of their INEXISTENT pr department, which sucks

LOL! AMD easily matches ATI in the suckiness of their PR/marketing teams. They've had the absolute best cpu out there for the past two years, and still no one but enthusiasts have heard of them. Consider that, and then look at the Conroe launch. People are flipping out over Core 2, the motherboards are selling out at $250-300 a pop, and you can't even get hold of the cpu's yet!

wern't amd k8 being sold so fast they could hardly keep up with the demand.

Jumping to conclusions it is. AMD apparently hasnt made any decisions so far, but one thing is for sure: we wont see chipsets with the ATI name on it anymore.

It is, however, unlikely that they will drop the ATI brand on the discrete (high end) video cards - unless they decide to drop the ball in the performance segment and focus on the onboard and budget mass-junk.

Our sister publication Custom PC discovered yesterday that a number of AMD and ATi staff had understood the ATi brand was to be dropped. However, AMD has backtracked on that position, saying no such decision has been made and that it maintains a strong commitment to the ATi brand.

Yeah, wait for something official from AMD first, cos atm its all speculation.

Anyway, so long as they keep producing top quality video cards that are competitive, they can brand them how they like for all I care.
