ATI warranty question

I am sending in my 9700pro for warranty work. I have heard that ATI will sometimes replace the card with something different. But on my RMA request, it's listed as a repair. How do they determine whether or not they repair or replace? Do they actually try and repair the video card first? Or is it easier for them just to send a brand new card? Just curious. Whatever I get is what I get, I understand that.

hmm...not really sure, i think they first see what the problem is, and if its something really major they send back a new card...anyway they have stopped manufacturing 9700pros so u might get back a 9800pro

Usually they have a supply of reconditioned cards sitting on a shelf and when your card comes in, they'll send you one of those in exchange. That way you get a card quicker than having to wait for them to diagnose, repair and return your original card.

That being said, as ddogg said, 9700 Pros have been out of production for awhile now, so it's a definite possibility that you'll get a 9800 Pro in return.

Thanks for the responses. I guess we'll see what happens.

In the meantime, I have my older Quadro in my system again. I guess I won't be playing games for a few days, but it's nice not to have my computer locking up and crashing every few hours. 😀

Here's what ATI is shipping back. Is this a 9700 or a 9800? Does the below info tell you anything? They shipped it out today, overnite. Of course, it's not getting delivered until Monday.

R350 128MB BGA V-VO-DI HY-(338M/378E)

ATi ran out of 97xx series cards about 8 months ago...as I saw in previous threads, so those who are sending 97xx in will get a R350 9800 Pro back. Can't beat that with a stick.
