ATI videocard how-to? Custom resolution and HDMI audio

I have a mobo with NVidia chipset and GF 8200 integrated graphics and am thinking about adding an ATI videocard. I have two questions:

--- Can I create a working custom resolution as easily with ATI Catalyst driver as with NVidia driver? I want to use 1384x864 to fill/scale on a 16:10 widescreen (24 inch). Where can I do this in the Catalyst Control Panel? It would be kind of someone with a recent ATI card/driver to create/test this resolution on a 22 or 24 inch monitor, and report back.

--- How will the HDMI audio work with my mobo and ATI videocard? Will installing the ATI Catalyst driver correctly feed the audio into the HDMI output, without SPDIF cable, even with a non-ATI chipset?
