I found a terrific deal on a 64MB 8500LE (Hercules) recently and decided to replace an aging GF2 in my second rig (used for occasional LAN gaming). Hardware specs are:

-XP2200
-MSI KT3 Ultra2 (KT333 chipset) MB
-SB Live5.1
-512MB Crucial PC2700
-120GB WD BB HDD
-Two Lite-On ODDs
-Two NEC SCSI ODDs

I clean installed WinXPpro/SP1, Cat 3.4s, the latest SB drivers and BF1942 (high details @ 1024x768). When the action got to be "medium-heavy" I'd get the stuttering people have been talking with this game. I installed VIA's 4.45s (no change), then the BF1942 1.31patch (again no effect on the stuttering).

I thought, is this card too slow to play at these settings? Does it not have enough RAM for the maps I was playing in? Could it be the drivers? Well my main rig using a 9000pro plays the game just fine at the same settings (but it is a 128MB card). Main rig specs:

-XP2200
-MSI KT4VL (KT400 chipset) MB
-built by ATI 128MB 9000pro
-SB Live Platinum
-512MB Crucial PC2700
-80GB WD WB HDD
-Lite-On and Toshiba ODDs

At the time I was too busy to trouble shoot further and a friend (doesn't game) needed a good 2D dual head card so out it went. Days later I thought, what else could be the cause of the problem?

I took the 9000pro out of the main rig and put it in the second one...same problem! I checked the KT3's BIOS and the AGP settings were set exactly the same as they were in the trouble free KT4VL/KT400 chipset MB. Is there be something wrong with the implementation of AGP port/specs on this MSI KT3 Ultra2 MB/VIA KT333 chipset? I don't no but I don't think it was the ATI card and or software either.

What is the point of this long winded thread? Did I fall for some of the ATI FUD that's been posted here and get rid of a perfectly good card when maybe the motherboard should have been-and soon will be-the thing to go?

I hope your friend doesn't get pissed when he finds out the Herc 8500le isn't really even a dual head card (herc omitted the external RAMDAC on their 8500le)
