ATI users - how do I fix this?

Okay, gave ati a try a few years back with the 7000 series - polygons in Quake 3 skies and other assorted problems led me running back to Nvidia. Tried an 8500 not too long ago, same thing. Now I have a 9800 Pro which many people here swear is a great card and yet same damn problem with a tried and trusted game engine. Would happily call ATI but unlike Nvidia, they charge for tech support. I'd attach a screenshot if I could but don't think its possible here.
Does anyone have Q3 running on a machine with an ATI card; if so, what are your driver settings? I know it's an old game but it bugs the hell out of me that this is still a problem after almost 3 years...

Driver settings? I don't understand what you mean.

Firstly, do you have the latest version of DirectX installed? That would be version 9c.

Also, you just install the ATI Catalyst drivers and try playing that way, BEFORE you mess w/any settings. ;)

It sounds to me like you're a "button pusher" or you're "click happy.

Just try installing the stuff, leaving the setting alone (save desktop resolution and monitor refresh rate) and playing.

Speaking of: You DO have the .inf file (driver) loaded for your monitor, right?

I didn't catch that. Your OS install is THREE years old? You've probably got more bugs and corrupted files than a Microsoft Product. :D

Time for a wipe and reload, my friend!!! Start fresh and all will be well again.

No, I've had this problem span three different systems - sorry, should have mentioned that. I actually discovered now that the problem is only with custom PADMAPS that I have installed, not with the ID maps that come with the game. With the 8500, every single map was corrupted but at least this time around it's just the custom jobs that, while pretty, I can do without, if necessary.

Thanks anyway - it looks like I'm an ATI user now...
