Hi.

I've been using ATi Tray tools since a few months, and I had a version that was not up-to-date. I saw a few moments ago that a newer version is available. So I downloaded and installed it.

There is a few things I'd like to know, because I got one strange problem with this new version, and, I got a few questions related to some of the new Direct3D features.

First of all, the "problem".

When the program is running, I cannot access many things in my Desktop. For example, if I right-click on my Desktop, and then select "properties", nothing happens at all. And also I cannot use the Run feature, under "Start". The place where we can type "msconfig", "regedit" and others.

But, as soon as I Exit the program, all those Windows functions can be used without problems.

And, finally, my questions about some of Direct3D's features.

There is an Advanced Direct3D Tweaks window, and in it, there is a Tiling section.

Options such as: Local Texture Tiling, AGP Texture Tiling, Primary Tiling...and others, all with Tiling at the end. All of them but Primary Tiling are disabled. Should I enable some of them ? What's their role ? Does it improve performance and / or image quality ?

Also, I would like to know if I need to let the process of ATi Tray Tools run in the background for the features to be "applied" ?

Or is it ok to turn the program off ?

Because right now I need to turn it off, because I got that strange problem when it's on. But, if turning it off does not disable the selected features, then I will of course always turn it off.

I'd appreciate some help, comments and / or facts.

Thanks for your time.

If you are talking about the Catalyst control center, get rid of it.
It doesnt really do anything useful and causes many problems.

Uninstall with ATI's catalyst cleaner, and download the drivers that DONT have the Catalyst control center. You will be much happier.

Same thing with anything thats runs in your tray. They dont help much and suck up CPU time and RAM.
Its very amusing that a company would put out software like this, considering you need all the RAM and processor power you can get (for gaming).

ATI tray tools is a tweak program that runs in the tray and enables a bunch of extra stuff. Its not the CCC.

No I'm not using the Catalyst Control Center. I never liked it.

I'm using the good old Control Panels.

And I'm also using Rage 3D Tweak. But this one doesn't let me adjust the same features that ATi Tray Tools lets me to. Such as Catalyst A.I, and many Direct3D options.

I know how to use ATi Tray Tools.

I just don't know if I need to let it run in the Tray to make it so the changes are actually applied.

And finally, I don't know why the latest version of ATi Tray Tools doesn't let me access many of Windows services and features while it's running. It's only when I exit the program that my Windows is fully functional. And that never happened before, when I had older versions. I would have kept my old version, but this new one I downloaded is filled with new features and stability improvements.

I've been using ATI Tray Tools v1.0.1.538 (latest version) with no problems. If Windows has issues now, I doubt it was caused by installing the ATI Tray Tools. You may need to restore your Windows back to when it wasn't causing problems.

And yes, you do need to have ATI Tray Tools running for any profile settings to take place. You can have it run at boot-up and apply any hardware settings you want.

The Rage 3D Tweak might be incompatible with the ATI Tray Tools. Uninstall the Rage thing and see if that helps your stability.

Bumping this thread up because there is a hotfix for this issue - go here, look for the posts from Ray Adams, he's posted a replacement raphook.dll for the latest version.
