ATI Tool found my max overclock to be 415/535 on my X800XL.

I thought this was kinda low so I bumped it up to 425/551 and 3DMark05 ran flawlessly with no artifacts, no crash.

has anyone else found such a discrepency between ATI Tool and actual max overclock?

No, ATI Tool was spot-on for me within 5mhz on both clocks. Are you sure you didn't have any artifacts, even small ones?

I went all the way up to 440/569 and I got no artifacts even though ATI Tool showed me a slew of them.

If there were artifacts I didn't see them. At 425/551 ATI showed me a lot of errors and at 440/559 there were a slew of errors, but 3DMark *looked* fine.

I'm not gonna argue that there were probably small ones I didn't see, but if according to ATI Tool 425/551 showed errors, even if they weren't visible in 3DMark, 440/569 should have crashed my system when running 3DMark. But it didn't. Any pixel artifacts, if any, were not any more visible at 440/569 than 425/551.

Pretty strange you might say.

there's more to overclocking a gfx card than watching 3dmark and looking for artifacts.

Atitool is usually pretty close, better make that like 10mhz less on GPU/RAM when it comes to real world games or certain benchmarks.

If you really want to know WHAT to run and where to look maybe go iver to rage3d and read some of viperjohns posts...but for a first quick start
i'd sat Atitool MINUS 10mhz should be good.
