ATI to rebrand some cards

but the fact remains: Radeon HD 3400- and 3600-series graphics cards may soon start new lives as Radeon HD 4200-, 4500-, and 4700-series products. That name change admittedly seems a tad counterintuitive, considering the RV730-based Radeon HD 4670 is roughly as fast as the old Radeon HD 3850 overall. Who said arbitrary re-brandings had to make sense, though?

Why would they even still be producing 34xx and 36xx chips though? They already have replacement equivalents in the 4xxx series at the same price points.

On the other hand, you can bet that most of these new 3000-turned-4000-series cards will be making their way to people through various rip off channels such as Best Buy and configure-to-order desktop PCs.

I would complain more, but the fact is that they will sell... And it only makes the playing field level between NVIDIA and ATi public relations-wise again, both being as naughty as each other

You know, they used to at least die-shrink them before rebadging them as "new" budget models. At least then you were getting something that had a little less power consumption and maybe had some minor improvements.

this sort of makes sense. technically they are more or less the same "generation" they are all 55nm and based ont he same shader architecture.

so basically

3400 series -> 4200 = 40 shaders
4350 / 4550 = 80 shaders
3650 -> 45x0 (lets say 4570) = 120 shaders)
4650/4670 = 320 shaders, with 128 bit bus
3800 -> 4700 = 320 shaders with 256bit bus
4800 = 800 or 640 shaders


I think honestly thats "a bit too much selection" but there must be warehouses full of these 3 series chips left over or something.

Maybe I missed something, but is renaming a 3600 a 4400 a terrible thing? If they are renaming the 3600 the 4600 or 4700, then that's shitty thing to do in my opinion. But naming a current model card as a lesser model in the next generation is a completely different thing then say the 9800GT garbage...

I think that the renaming of videocards suck, both for Nvidia and ATi. Leave the bloody card as it was and invent others, but don't rename them because that will just add confusion in the market.

Well, I sort of agree.

If you have a 4400,4600,4700 which is the faster? One with higher number.

If you have a 8600gt, 8800gt, 9800gt which is the faster? the 8800gt, but the people think 9800gt is faster but Nvidia doesn't tell you it's slower and about the same as the 8600. It is a newer card so a lot of ppl are misled.

I actually like that Nvidia is rebranding it again, but this time so it makes sense... the GTX150 or whatever. But calling the 8800GT a 9800GT is misleading in my opinion, as you said. Taking a card from a current gen and labeling it as something lower (say a mid range card now becomes your entry level, and a new mid range that is more powerful goes above that and so on) makes sense to some degree.

ummm IIRC the 9800GT is just the 8800GT rebadged...possibly built on a smaller process too, but last time I checked a 9800GT could demolish a 8600GT with ease.

But I could be wrong, I haven't paid much attention to Nvidia for the past year.

As long as the HD3650 isn't going to be called a 4730, then I don't see a problem with AMD naming these parts in correlation with the latest cards they have out.

Redd is wrong, the 8800GT and 9800GT are the same exact card.

It's ironic because people were bashing NVIDIA for renaming GPUs regardless that ATI already had a history of doing that. I guess ATI no longer smells of roses... but then again some people will just hate NVIDIA because it is in people's nature to hate... I guess.

Some 9800 GT are rebadged 8800 GT, but these days most are not. And yes, a 9800 GT will kill an 8600 GT.

4350 = $40
4550 = $50
4650 = $60
4670 = $80
4830 = $90

These more than likely got put in by accident, but that doesn't stop nvidia fans from jumping on anything they can find. ( transparent rocks anyone ).

The only problem I can see with rebranding is that some customers don't understand that a higher number doesn't always mean better performance.

, but in topic, I don't know why is ATi rebadging those low end cards, unless if ATi did some optimizations for their Anti Aliasing performance, is quite pointless, considering that the RV6XX and RV770 are almost identical at the architecture level.

i think about the reason why they would do this is that it worked for nvidia(they sell the 9500gt with 1gb ram like hotcakes)
