This may be the first time in history the early adopters were rewarded.

Wasn't this just mentioned in another thread here yesterday...something about making supply meet demand by way of raising prices and reducing demand?

First time paying the "early adopter tax" has been to my benefit.

I can see that AMD/ATI needs all the revenue they can get and an increase in their pricing from the 4xxx series was inevitable, but they should have just launched higher. Launching high and lowering over time is one thing, but I think raising MSRP isn't going to sit well. After all the hoopla about value last gen, they really are going to rub consumers the wrong way.

...Not that it really matters right now, they are sold out everywhere anyway.

Was really impressed with amd recently. They were headed in the right direction and now this. Glad I was waiting to see what nvidia has in the 300. Amd can take their Gpu's and their low performing cpu's and stick it in their asses!

What is this all about? This is what happens when there is no competition. AMD is not a charity company, that is made to help gamers play their games. It's a company, just like any other company, orientated towards profit. When Nvidia was alone in the market, they've thrown their cards prices sky high. Why wouldn't AMD do the same? Wouldn't you do it if you were in their shoes?
I'm surprised that their cards were released at the current price tags from the beginning. They could have cost more right from the start.

Exactly. But some of the same people who blasted nV for doing it will now be forced to defend it.

I will be consistent: AMD has every right to charge what the market will bear. With limited supply, I dont blame them for raising prices.

As error8 said, they could have launched even higher.

Dont we want these companies to profit so they can invest more in R&D?

Which is better, releasing at a low price then raising because demand is much higher than supply, or releasing at a very high price and only lowering when the competition shows up and makes it a necessary move?

But yeah, pretty shitty move, but kind of understandable. They shouldn't have messed with it though :|

Naw - remember the 8800GT? Anyone who nabbed one of those in the first few days got a deal, anyone who bit after the first week got screwed.

*sigh* Now I'll really have to wait for a Fermi competitor to drive prices down instead of getting a 5850 for Xmas.

Still, there isn't any dx11 game out there and we don't even know if these cards will run it as it should, so what is the rush? Any card that is at least at the level of a GTX 260/4870 can play any current game out there maxed out. Waiting for Fermi is not such a hard thing after all. :)

Haha I was actually going to mention that but figured most wouldn't get it anyway. Way to work that crystal ball IDC.

I think MSRP and retail prices are different so I think it's hard to tell what it will actually cost?

No. Intelligent companies try to make money when they can.

Evil companies are the ones that stop supporting older products in new operating systems. ;)

How can people compare this to Nvidia releasing the GTX280 at what was it, 649$? LOL!

399$ and you get the only DX11 capable card out there, while being the best performer at the same time... Terrible deal huh?

Also in before Wreckage replying "GTX295 is the best card. In fact, even GTX260 beats it due to physx and 3d vision and CUDA. All hail Nvidia."

the gtx280 was Nvidias top card on release and no faster dual card from them was even planned at the time. now the 5870 is ONLY HALF of ATIs top card and we know their 5970(5870x2) is coming in a few weeks. sure the gtx280 was overpriced but the 5970 will likely be just as pricey if not more so your comparison makes little sense if you really think about it.

Right on schedule.
