Video quality on the Theater 550 chips is supposed to be good. Of course, since you're starting from VHS cassettes, quite possibly the crappiest video source on the friggin' planet, I doubt you would notice a difference between a crappy and good capture card anyway.

According to the shots at Newegg, it includes "PowerCinema 3", which I'm pretty sure is a basic editor/DVD authoring tool. Of course, once you have MPEG2 video, you can do the editing and authoring with any program.

Right, I've got some DVD authoring programs. I have a bunch of MiniDV stuff to do, but had some VHS tapes I wanted to archive as well. The reviews only talk about its TV tuning abilities, and I was just curious if could capture VHS at all.

Um, of course it can?

I've never seen a TV tuner card that didn't have RCA and/or S-Video capture. Just look at photos of the board on Newegg; you can clearly see the breakout box with the S-Video/RCA inputs.

Ok, thanks. I have never used such a device before and I saw the connections, but wasn't sure if allowed capturing through those connections, or if it was merely for watching TV.

One more thing. Are there any recommended software capture programs that are compatible with the Theater 550 pro? I doubt the one that ships with the card is any good.

I've got that card coming for my new build. IIRC, the Cyberlink software doesn't support s-video or composite capture, and is pretty crappy all around from every review I've read. I'm not sure what software is supported, and I'll be using it in MCE primarily. I'll definately be wanting to use the s-video and composite for capture, and I'm sure something will support it even if I have to use a filtergraph in Graphedit to do it:)

That sucks. The supplied software doesn't really do much then :(

I'm hoping someone out there has some recommended software that supports the Theater 550 Pro for VHS and TV captures.

rbV5: Good luck with your 550 Pro!

I've read like a dozen reviews on the card coz I want to get one, too. Yes, the Cyberlink Power Cinema(CPC) is something to laugh at. The card is compatible with Windows Media Center(WMC) OS, so if you have that OS then you have the best application for the hardware possible. Also an alternative, you can buy ATI's Multimedia Center(MMC) for $10 I believe. There's a bunch of others that are free and not so free; expensive and cheapo.

Let me discuss more about the card. Most of the reviews if not all mentioned that flipping between channels took roughly 2 seconds, which is rather slow. One reviewer surmised that it may be due to the tuner or CPC software. What's worse is that CPC won't allow you to explicitly tune in to a channel. You change channels linearly. So if you're on channel 1 and you want to go to channel 25, that would take you 50 seconds to accomplish.

Another reviewer mentioned that when using using the PVR feature of CPC, there's a slight delay between when the signal arrives to the hardware and what you actually see on screen. To illustrate, if you watch the same channel on a regular TV and your PC tuner what you see on your PC is a few seconds behind what is showing on TV. One gamer mentioned that when he plugged his Sony PS2 to the PC tuner there's a lag between his button mashing and what the characters are doing on screen. He recommended using an alternative application, DScaler and he got a realtime response although the visuals was not as good.

I surmise that this delay is due to the filtering the Theater 550 Pro chip employs. Since it needs to buffer several frames for analyzing there's inherently a delay from when a signal arrives and when it actually gets displayed on screen. If there's a way to enable/disable these features through software that would be great. I'm not too excited about the filters ATI used on the chip as it blurs or softens the final image slightly.

Nero will support the 550pro! I used it to edit my spring break vid with my old X800 PRO. In fact just about any software you buy will support it, it more a matter of what software is the least buggy. Panicle was not impressive at all and Roxio was nice but i herd that some people had issues, I didn?t personally. Nero Vision was fine though. Your going to have to mess with the setting to get the capture to look good though.

what? ATI MMC doesn't cost any money. it is available free of charge at www.ati.com. MMC can take an svideo or composite input source and record to a file using the codec of your choice.

i think it's free period. i can goto ati.com and download MMC, not entering any serial numbers nor having a previously installed version on my system.

Its free period....the DVD decoder requires an original installation CD to install. For the Theater 550 it is a moot point anyway since Theater 550 cards are not supported in ATI MMC.

I think its incredibly ironic after ATI has received so much flack about their MMC software all these years (especially from TV Wonder users).

I do wish ATI will support Theater 550 cards in MMC, however my Sapphire Theatrix works great in MCE 2005. The Cyberlink software is also better than the reviews make it out IMO. It biggest drawback is the lack of a EPG (which makes it unsuitable for real PVR duties) otherwise, its an OK software.

The card is also supported in apps like MPC, and I've built working filter graphs for capturing with s-video and composite using graphedit. It would be nice if they offered the card without the remote for MCE 2005 users, but the Sapphire was a good value with everything included. I'll be getting another one for dual tuners.
