ATI Technologies Trims Functionality of Next-Generation Graphics Processor

ATI

there was an german article somewhere (too lazy to link) where they said:

"We can confirm, withot a doubt, that R420 wil NOT have PS3.0"

They also say (and IMHO this is not even stupid) that ATI instead focused on improving PS2.0 instead of putting effort on PS3.0, features which will be used maybe in 2006 or 2007 - the R420 card will already be down in the low-budget market at the time games come out with support for PS3.0

This is not even stupid.

Think about how many REAL dx9 titles we have NOW which use PS2.0 !

The point is, we're so foolish to spend $$$ on cards which are dx9 and have PS2.0 support, but only ONE or TWO (if EVEN !) games actually support it - MOST games use DX8 code, games like max payne, prince of persia...games THOUGHT that they're actually using dx9 and the hardware for it. But they dont.

From that point of view i do NOT think that the lack of PS3.0 would be significant - it would ONLY be signifcant in case 3dmark or someting comes out with some PS3.0 tests and ATI cant run them !!! It will take a LONG time 'til we see games who USE PS3.0...i would be glad having games which UTILIZE a card like Radeon 9800 to its fullest, not even THAT right now....

It's maybe a 'wise' move even if some people might not like it.

ASSUMING it's true and not rumors !

Your point is true but the thing is, delaying ps 3 in hardware will also delay it in software. Software firms are not on a mission of fiscal suicide. They will only implement ps 2 or ps 3 or [insert feature here] once the hardware for it is widely deployed.

If hardware manufacturers dont support ps3, you cant expect software companies, to bring out games with it either.

they are prolly saving PS3 for the filler card they will release after R420 and befor the next generation of cards. then people who spend there rent money on R420 will throw the card out when the revision comes out with PS3.0 support 😛

- its a bad thing
It will take longer for games to support PS3.0, it might not take longer and then nvidia will have the card to buy

- its a good thing
We will actually have a card that can fully use PS2.0 to the fullest at great speeds

I think that the graphics industry has moved waaay too fast in the last few years, games have turned into an eyecandy fest, each and everyone wants to show is how well our $300+ card was worth the money. Gameplay has seriously suffered but thankfully some recent games have focused more on gameplay than before. Just one year of standstill graphics development could bring us much much better games than before

Not until Carmack works with the feature set on his next engine(won't exactly be PS 2.0, but you know what I mean). It has been over four years now and we are still waiting to see a game that takes advantage of the GeForce1's level of programmability to the fullest(DooM3 namely). The upcoming parts won't be close to fast enough to push what is possible with PS 2.0, not even close. Neither will the NV50/R500 for that matter. With what is possible with PS 2.0 you can get very near FFTSW(not quite, but very close in terms of end results) levels of quality, you just won't get anything resembling a decent framerate. One of the advantages of PS 3.0 is the ability to do the exact same thing as you can in PS 2.0(and some more) with less work.
