Please tell me any reason why not to do this? I dont care about it taking up an extra slot. I just want the best possible temps for my card. Every review I see for it is filled with praise. I guess the only thing that is scaring me is the removing/installing part. I will be putting this on my X800GTO2 when I get my new system together. Just been drooling at it for days and trying to find any reason why i shouldnt spend the $40 bucks.

it's easy to install but costly. for the same price, a vf700 can be had which cools the gpu better but dosnet exhaust the hot air out of the case and rather keeps it swirling in the case unless you have a good exhaust system.
Larger cases or good airflow out of case: vf700
smaller case or ok to bad airflow: ati silencer

I will have it in a full tower, im not sure how airflow will be, but it should be good its a Gigabyte 3d Aurora. Just seems like reviews love the ATI Silencer and for a few extra bucks why not have the hot air directed out of the case? Wouldnt that just help your system all around by leaving less hot air to compete with? Also it looks like the ATI will cool the ram better. Techpowerup gives the Silencer 5 a 9.5 rating while the VF700 ALCU gets a 8.7. Anyone have some personal experience to toss in here?

silencer is realyl nice to have. THe vf700 cools slightly better gpu wise, and truth be told the memory cooling is really not worthwhile on DDR3 ram which runs very cool(your video card has DDR3 right?).

Still, the silencer is really a nice looking piece of equipment and though may be harder to install(yuo might need to sand down the memory contacts a bit since all ram is different heights, it should ccool it better overall(gpu and ram wise)

Have you checked out the comments around the net, especially at SPCR? There are numerous ones that have failed and fried the card. Worth reading up on, at least.

Been looking all over and havent seen anything bad on the Silencer? Could it have been user error? I will get the GTO2 in the mail tommorow, I guess I will unlock and overclock and see how it goes with stock cooling, maybe i wont need anything extra to get up near X850XT PE speeds.

I have it. I like it. Quiet and dropped the 6800GT temps a full 10c when playing BF2. Card idles around 50c atm. Installation was not hard at all. Just take your time. After you get it in, remember to blow the dust out of it occasionally.

i have one for my gto fireblade, it keeps it really cool, its idle right now is about 36 celcius, and under load its anywhere from 58-60 (and those temps are when overclocked to 600/600)

Its very easy to install, as it was my first time doing it and the results are well worth the 20 min of hassel to put it on. Just make sure you have a small screwdriver set.

I added one to my x800xl. Using ATI Tool, I have the fan run at 100% and I still can't hear it. And it also dropped my temps >20c. I don't think it did much for my overclocking but I feel better that the card isn't running at >70c
