ATI Silencer 3 not compatible with 9800PRO 256MB???

I just bought an ATI Silencer 3 for my built-by-ATI Radeon 9800Pro 256MB card. It also has an R360 core. The packaging for the Silencer 3 clearly says it is made for this card. However, the 2 long studs for the ram sink do not come anywhere near to lining up with any holes on the card. The 2 studs across the GPU line up with the holes just fine. I emailed arctic cooling about this and am anxiously awaiting a reply.

It looks like I could cut off the studs that hold the ram sink on the back and the HSF would fit fine. Then maybe I use thermal glue to attach the ram sink to the back? This really sucks. What would you guys do? Has anyone else had this problem???

I was reading the feedback @ Newegg about this particular item you are talking about. One of the guys that posted feedback said that this particular silencer *does not* just bolt on and there is that issue of alignment that you mentioned. I know that it says on the packaging that it will work on the 9800 Pro 256/256, but others says "not".

Good luck and hope that you get this problem worked out.

I do have an update. Some guy from tech support emailed me back saying that "the ATI Silencer 3 does not fit that model of card". Well, as soon as I get a chance, I'm going to find the box and send him a picture of where it says it fits 9800Pro 256MB cards. I'm just running without the back ram sink. It definitely makes it run cooler. It's amazing just how much heat this thing is pulling out of that card.

What's an "ATI" Silencer 3?

The one by Arctic Cooling, Silencer 3 DOES fit the 256MB BB ATI 256MB Radeon Pro . . .

i know . . . i have one.

And why don't you flash the BIOS to a 9800XT . .. . simple, fast, easy, 5%+ more performance, higher core and memory, GPU temp monitor plus automatic O/C'ing. 😉

apoppin - there's the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer 3, and then there's the ATI Silencer line (1-4) which is separate from the VGA silencer, apparently.

For the ATI Silencers, according to their specs:

ATI Silencer 1 is for the Radeon 9500 Pro/9600/XT/9700Pro/9800Pro cards (It should fit the L-shaped 9500np as well since it's got the exact same layout as the 9700 Pro but not the straight line memory 9500np, which has a different configuration)
ATI Silencer 2 is for the entire 9600 series (9600/Pro/XT)
ATI Silencer 3 is for the 9800 XT and certain 256MB 9800 Pro cards (ie the ones with the same layout as the 9800XT)

ATI Silencer 4 is for the X800 Pro and XT cards; I currently have one of these on my X800 Pro and I love it 🙂 .

Thanks, Jiffy!

. . . . so the ATI silencer should fit the r360 256MB Pro . . . . of course (unfortunately for the OP) there were SEVERAL versions of the 256MB Pro card 😉

I ran into this problem with my Sapphire 9800pro 256/256 and the Arctic cooling Ati Silencer 3. Apparently, they changed the pcb during the run and now that particuler cooler will no longer fit. I had to return it and go with the Arctic VGA cooler.

For those that do not know, there are multiple products with very similar names from Arctic Cooling. There is the original VGA Silencer line. Then, there are brand-specific lines. One is the ATI SILENCER series. These are designed to work with only ATI products. The ATI Silencer 3 is NOT the VGA SILENCER v3.

Yeah, and also, if your 9800pro comes with any type of ramsink, any of the arctic cooling solutions are most likely NOT to be compatible. In this case, you are stuck with Zalman or Aerocool

So it sounds like some built-by-ATI Radeon 9800 Pros can use this cooler and some cannot. Which card do you have? Can you take a photo of it? I have a 9800 Pro that looks just like an XT card, so I wonder if I'll be able to use the cooler in its entirety.
