ok i just got my card from new egg today. its the sapphire version of ati elite 550pro tv tuner card. i got it refurb so it came bare/ no manuals/cds/remote. i downloaded the ati version drivers from their site.

i use the old ati tv tuner program and it lets me watch tv but i bought this card so i could watch tv using media center 2005. it wont detect the card and gives me error saying "DECODE ERROR: The video decoder has either malfuntioned or is not installed. please restart media center and/or computer"

how can i fix this!>!>!>? 🙁 any help would be appreciated! thanks

You need to install a DVD decoder to watch TV/Record in MCE. MCE doesn't ship with one, nor does the Theatrix TV card. Generally they ship with your graphics card.

soo where could i get a dvd decoder? i thought the 550pro chip had one built in? i have ati 9700pro video card.

is it software i can download somewhere or what? thanks=)

You can purchase them from Intervideo and Cyberlink, among others, although I don't recommend Cyberlink. I have been using Intervideo's WinDVD for awhile now and have found it to be stable and producing very good IQ.

I think there are some free DVD decoders out there as well.

Your 9700 pro should have a DVD decoder with the install disc. BBA ATI cards generally have ATI DVD decoder on the original install disc, the disc allows you to enable the updated decoder from ATI which is MCE compatable. 3rd party ATI cards generally ship with a version of PowerDVD which should also work.

thegreenbutton is worth checking out if you have MCE Q's.

I believe that Theater 550 has the hardware encoder to encode into MPEG2. As everyone mentioned you need a decoder to watch the recorded content as well as DVDs. I'd suggest giving CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) a try. I installed it on my machine, and can watch DVDs through Windows Media Player. Make sure you read the help/installation notes first.
