wow. i was just thinking " why isn't ATI in the chipset game for AMD CPUs? They could bundle their Radeon 9600 IGP and have a solid all-in-one package. It'd beat the crap outta intel extreme and Geforce something MX."

Great move. I hope their chipset prove great and alot of 3rd parties adapt it. No more AGP and more SATA connectors coming.

Their RS300 chipset, aside from the shortcomings of the southbridge, is pretty solid. Good move, ATi!

More players in the market = more high-quality stuff and lower prices. Gotta love it :).

Or, more frequent driver releases, with less testing by "real" beta testers, and more testing done by regular users.

Wonder how much it's gonna be?

Might be a neutered 9600 adapted for IGP, like 2 pipes, lower clock speed etc. And memory is going to be slow too.
Won't be all that great, they have to keep transistor count fairly low.

This is OT, so forgive me.

Is AMD making a chipset for the AMD64/Opteron? I haven't been keeping up, but my next system will probably be Opteron in a few years, and I'm not putting a VIA board in my system.

Yep, the AMD 8xxx family of chips, they've split it up into a bunch of chips, PCI-X tunnels, AGP tunnel, etc etc.
Don't remember which ones are the same chip and not.

I thought the laptop 9600 were discrete seperate entities?

Thats what they mention about Dell's anyway.

Freakin' AWESOME!! BAD time for me to have bought a mobo/cpu combo... :(

Oh well.... we won't see these systems on the market for a few months yet and the AMD64 chips is still too expensive for me. It'd be cheaper for me to get a cheap-o Sapphire 9600NP. :p

But a year from now - this will be THE bargain system to get!
