ATi RS350

Text

Very impressive, and prescott is looking like a better solution even at lower clockspeeds.

If this board OCs well ill definately consider it for my next Intel board (upgrading to prescott when the new steppings hit).

If you read the review, ATi claims the board will sport very good overclocking features, but they were disabled on the review sample.

I'm impressed. ATi was able to beat Intel at their own game with Prescott, outperforming i865 and i875 chipsets, not to mention offering much better graphics than the G-series.

Good job!

Well... In all fairness, the i865 platform is well over a year old. And the R350 boards aren't available yet. Chances are that Grantsdale and Alderwood will be available by the time R350 is. 🙂

But yeah... So far, ATi seems to be doing quite well with their first steps into the chipset business.

Wingz, tell Intel we want Rambus back 🙁

I miss my I850E motherboard that kept up until I865 finally beat it 😛

Looks good for OEMs but it won't help me out as a white box builder. Dell will be able to couple this with a Prescott for dirt cheap but it won't provide the price-to-performance the nF2 IGP/2400+ does for my clients. I would have to config the ATi with a celeron to get near the price point and we all know the 2400+ will stomped an equivalently priced celery. I can purchase a retail 2400+ and WD SE 80gb HDD for $10 more than the Prescott 2.4A sells for alone@the moment.

It's a wise decision on ATi's part since Intel dominates the market share, and certainly adds value to a Intel IGP system, particularly if the overclocking claims are true. Ignoring the little fish like me doesn't hurt anyone's bottom line either. My only intent is to voice a very minority opinion of why AMD/nF2 IGP will continue to be my weapon of choice for ultra-budget boxes when it comes to price-to-performance solutions in the near future.

Now, if ATi will stop dragging their feet on the AMD version of this chipset and it's a good overclocker, I will have some more options  The other more remote possibilty is that the next line of Celerons *Prescott based?* will actually be as good a price/performer as a few rumors floating around suggest.

EDIT: you summary is wrong, this is ATi's 3rd Intel chipset 😉 The first was the IGP 340/340M

If they can get the cache sizes up on the prescott based celerons they should perform alright. But they will still be celerons...

The main crippling factor on celerons now is the tiny L2 cache.

915G in 2 months 😛

I mean RS350 looks nice, but Intel will have a real DX9 IGP in just a couple weeks with some pretty heavy hitting features.

Meh.
