ATI Refurb deal X800 XTPE is going to be going back to ATI on RMA

Best guess scenario, if Ati actually delivers on all of these cards - hard to believe they have had that many repairable refurbs in original sales. Still is all guess work, as is hard to know who actually bought one and if it was any good or really had to go back. Part of the excitement of these forums, no one knows who is truthfull and who is just having some fun, or has a vested interest.
How do you figure that? Usually, factory refurbished items go through even MORE scrutiny than an item fresh from the assembly line. It's the "stick-it-in-a-box-and-send-it-to-the-next-guy" refurbished items from disreputable (and sometimes, unfortunately, reputable) online companies that gives the whole "refurbished" idea a bad rep.
It's guesswork. Some of the people who have already received their cards have examined them closely to look for signs of prior installations (ie - scratches on AGP connector from having been previously inserted). Some people are reporting no visible marks whatsoever which points to the possibility of it being a new card.
I use the term damaged loosely. The item could be superficially "damaged" (ie. nick or scratch) all the way up to unfunctional. But from what I've found, most of the refurbished products will not be of the same quality and aestheic appearance as a near perfect new product. The problem as a whole is that refurbished is not usually new.
It would be like saying that a used car could be as good as a new car b/c people have gone through the trouble to have it inspected. While that is true, it still may have some small problems or superficial damages that make it used and not as good as a new product. There's no expectation that a refurbished product will be near perfect, just that it should be functional. New products on the other hand, have an expectation of a near-perfect condition.
Well, my X800XT PE arrived this afternoon, so I just swapped it in place of my Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer equipped 9500NP. Although it is noisy in the first 2-3 seconds upon bootup, it quickly drops down to a level that's not much above what my system previously sounded like.
Maybe yours is stuck on high RPM for some reason?
Check out the last 2-3 pages of posts from this thread...I'm very confident that several ten-of-thousands of X800XT PEs where shipped from ATI. Mine was brand spanking new.

Thanks for the info, both of you! Noise if very important to me and the fear that I will lose my warranty by using an after market cooler is real. Hope mine comes soon and I can report my findings. Will be hard to be quieter than a zalman heatsink without a fan, but we will see. So Creig was the gain worth the loss of some silence?
Thanks, it was just too good of a deal to pass up. I doubt it'll give me as much of a service life as my old 9500NP did, but I figure it should last a year or so.
I haven't really had a chance yet to see how much of an improvement it will give me over my old card. Since I'm always wearing headphones when gaming anyhow, the small increase in fan noise doesn't really affect me.
I'm fairly certain I won't really push the card hard until I can replace my 2.5GHz Barton with something a bit faster. I'm thinking I'll pick up a ULI M1695 board and an X2 3800+ sometime in the not-too-distant future.
