ATi reference drivers on mobile ATi GPU?

Has anyone successfully installed ATi's reference drivers under Vista 64-bit WITHOUT third party tools or modifications (ie just forcing it to install through device manager as you can with Nvidia)?

If so, any issues? Do Blu Ray and games still work?

I'm really close to buying an XPS 1640, but I'm iffy on being stuck with an ATi GPU. I do NOT want to rely on any third party software to install updated drivers...

I'd just prefer not to, and there's no need to with Nvidia's drivers (even before the official notebook support). I'm hoping it's the same for ATi's stuff.
