More promises of good things from ATi.

Now we just have to wait...again :p

While this is mainly a motherboard review, there was this interesting note.
Pay attention to the bolded part!

While the exact performance results achieved comparing X1800XT Crossfire with 7800GTX SLI can not yet be published, we can tell you we benchmarked with F.E.A.R., Quake 4, Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory, Doom 3, Far Cry, and 3DMark05 at 1600x1200 resolution with 4X AA and 8X AF enabled. ATI X1800XT Crossfire won every benchmark over nVidia 7800GTX SLI in these tests.

We also ran standard scores (1024x768) for Aquamark 3, 3Dmark03, and 3Dmark05. Once again Crossfire X1800XT outperformed nVidia 7800GTX SLI in every benchmark.

We then ran all the same tests in single video mode, comparing a single X1800XT on the ATI RD480 to a single 7800GTX on the ATI A8N32-SLI. Benchmarks were run under the same conditions as Crossfire/SLI - 1600x1200/4xAA/8xAF in games and "standard" scores in 3Dmarks and Aquamark 3. Once again the ATI X1800XT on the RD580 was the winner in every benchmark. It is clear the new 5.11 drivers do make a difference in Open GL games like Quake 4 and Doom 3. Even more exciting, the RD580/X1800XT Crossfire will be a potent graphics combination.

There is no doubt that the nVidia 7800GTX 512MB, which everyone expected would launch 2 days ago as a 7800GTX Ultra, would likely win a head-to-head performance test as single or SLI when compared with the single X1800XT or Crossfire. However, ATI clearly believes the competitor for X1800XT is the $499 7800GTX and not the $700 7800GTX 512MB.

ATI was quite clear they will be introducing a "PE version" of X1800XT to compete with 7800GTX 512.

:)

I just read that preview myself. As I asked to Wes in the comments, I wonder if ATI has a plan for a competitor to the NF4 Ultra (no Crossfire but everything else is high end)?

Great news for everyone.

No more resolutions limitations like with the X800 Crossfire setups. And the chipset seems to be a great oveclocker. No more having to drop the HTT, which is very good news. The chipset seems to be great, rumors are you can run 1T with 4 sticks as well. All in all, good news.

In the article, they talked about the RD580 gpu was on schedule for mid-Jan, would that make buying a X1800XT now a bad idea? Knock on wood but that's only a couple of months. I thought I had my upgrades planned, 7800GTX 512 and Asus A8n32-SLI Deluxe but I may hold off.

Well ATI just need to survive this Quarter review... Somehow Calm down the shareholder because they have loads of goodies for next year. I was going to be buy the DFI Crossfire chipset but I am going to wait till next year jan? anyways I am going to Japan next month so I wouldn?t go crazy waiting : )

The worst thing that could happen to ATI which can make me said if company gets sold ;( and every goes in the wrong direction!

Well, Crossfire isn't important to ATi users, since more than one board is a gimmick anyways, or so they say. :)

Regarding the PE, I doubt we will see any of them in any real quantity.

This is indeed much better news than we've seen from ATI all year, but:
There is no doubt that the nVidia 7800GTX 512MB, which everyone expected would launch 2 days ago as a 7800GTX Ultra, would likely win a head-to-head performance test as single or SLI when compared with the single X1800XT or Crossfire.
They obviously don't have the performance crown yet, even with their vaporware.

However, ATI clearly believes the competitor for X1800XT is the $499 7800GTX and not the $700 7800GTX 512MB.
A. Did AT use $499 490/1300 GTXs for their tests? Or did they use standard clocked 430/1200GTXs that cost $450?
B. LOL! Let's see: ATI has been telling vendors to sell X1800XTs for $599.. MSRP on 512MB 7800GTXs is $659.. ATI says: "Do not compare our $600/512MB card that came out in November to nVidias $659MSRP 512MB card that came out in November! Our competition is CLEARLY the 256MB card that came out five months ago! "
What a CROCK. ATI must think we are REALLY stupid! Next they'll be telling us the X1800XT is meant to compete with the 512MB 6800U!

ATI was quite clear they will be introducing a "PE version" of X1800XT to compete with 7800GTX 512.
Wow! More vaporware from Canada! ATI says: "Do not buy the nVidia card that spanks our best that we are barely even getting to market! Be patient and wait for our NEW best we'll get to market soon!"

Best of all:
ATI says "We'll be releasing the R580 in January!" LOL- I wonder how the guys who waited all year for X1800XTs and then stood in line to get them for $600 feel about that?

This article is one big ATI PR piece, damage control for a year of misfires.

It will be nice when X1800XT Crossfires are available, and nicer yet when R580s are available.

Today though, I don't see much reason to buy a $600 X1800XT, and history teaches us that ATIs promises of products "coming soon" need to be on a "believe it when you see it" basis.

ATI seems to be caught in a release "Twilight Zone", but as they work their way through current release nightmares, the future looks as if it could be very bright again for ATI.

LOL- if that doesn't inspire confidence, I don't know what does.

Still no release date for this wonder tech, can Santa bring you one? ;)

Dont use blanket statements like that please. You have been embarrassingly wrong in the past, why even continue.

Yeah, and the 512mb have a higher MSRP. A more expensive card, should be faster? Why do you call the PE vaporware, but didnt make it a point to call the GTX vaporware before it came out? Lets be more fair and balanced.

However, ATI clearly believes the competitor for X1800XT is the $499 7800GTX and not the $700 7800GTX 512MB.

A. Probably the 430/1200, just as they used to compare against the 512mb GTX.
B. Lets try not to put words in someone elses mouth. ATi didnt say what you claim. Even so, its common knowledge that the XT was late, and was supposed to go up against the 256mb GTX. Why wouldnt it be compared to it? They both have the same MSRP, which shows its in the same "class" if you will. Im sure the PE will be $650 or so, matching the 512mb GTX's MSRP. And Im sure it will be reviewed agains the 512mb GTX. Why does it even matter to you, just cant have ATi having success?

ATI was quite clear they will be introducing a "PE version" of X1800XT to compete with 7800GTX 512.
Wow! More vaporware from Canada! ATI says: "Do not buy the nVidia card that spanks our best that we are barely even getting to market! Be patient and wait for our NEW best we'll get to market soon!" [/quote]

When did ATi say this? Again, lets stick to facts. Even if it was true, how is that any different than your posts trying to tell people to wait on vaporware from NV the last few weeks?

Best of all:
ATI says "We'll be releasing the R580 in January!" LOL- I wonder how the guys who waited all year for X1800XTs and then stood in line to get them for $600 feel about that?

When did ATi say Jan? Only thing I saw, was AT thinking that it would be mid-Jan. Lets stick to facts, and stop making up fake quotes to try and help your cause. Their last few release dates have been right on. Your negative attitude is not needed.

Its an article that is full of good news. Yet you just have to try and derail it, with your own personal bias. You didnt have a problem suggesting the 256 GTX for months, despite the rumors of the 512 GTX "Ultra". Why flip-flop now? I think we all know.

There was no release date for the 512mb GTX either. Why not have the same attitude for it? Again, we know why.
