I guess this has to do with the upcoming 512MB 7800GTX launch. Either way, it's too expensive for most users, but I don't see too many people looking at the 512MB X1800XT for $549 thinking "yeah baby" and then for $599 thinking "no way - too expensive!"

We'll see the performance numbers soon regarding the 512MB GTX and the X1800XT.

Article said short supply. I don't think this has anything to do with the 512GTX.

You don't think this has anything to do with the 512MB GTX? Don't you find it a little convenient?

Which people like MORPH already do :D

Can we get that big sticky back at the top of the forum? The one warning people not to flame or troll? :disgust:

Staying on topic, this is both odd and not particularly a good sign for ATI.

Either ATI is fooled into thinking the 512MB GTX compares to their X1800 XT, or NVIDIA has fooled us about what its performance numbers actually are. Someone is going to lose here when the true values of the two cards are compared to each other due to the similar price.

This just makes me sad.

I'd like to see ATi be competitive...but it appears they don't want to be :(

Agreed, This is horrible for consumers. I don't have a problem with High prices, supply and demand usually works that out. But the fact that they raise the MSRP in it I think is a sign that supply will be tight and while I am not going to point fingures directly at ATI, it probalby means they intend to profit a bit more for the higher prices they will be sold for in the future.

Think of it this way...

Product is released and sells for $650 company sells chips for lets say $350 and sets MSRP at $549.

Company notices places are selling for 650, and supply isn't going to be enough to lower that, company sells chips at $400 and set MSRP at $600 to up margins.

Hopes would be that the price doesn't move much because its already more then its suggested, but to improve profits retailers might sell it for more.

Hopefully non of this is the case and the MSRP won't matter (look at Nividia a day after the 6800GS it is alreay selling at $50 under MSRP) but raising the MSRP is never ever a good sign and usually has horrible effect on the consumer. Prices are supposed to come down the longer a product is out, not go up.

Makes sense, competitor has a product that is as fast as your selling for less, why not raise the price? In a week when that competitor has a product that in theory should blow your doors off it makes even more sense to raise the price of your product lmao.

If the rumoured specs for the 512mb GTX are true, ATI just made a big mistakes, letting down their *FEW* customers.

What was the MSRP on this thing again?

XFX GEFORCE 7800 GTX 512MB PCI EXPRESS DDR3 (#PVT70FYDF9) (Retail) (NO STOCK - Estimate arrival on 11/30/05). $799.00
QFT

THEN there's ZZF selling the eVGA one for $599

Link?

It was up briefly yesterday (although they also had the clocks at 470/1600 for the one selling for $599). It's gone now, and may not bear any resemblance to actual pricing of the cards when they are actually available for purchase.

This is definitely a puzzling move for ATI.

I don't think the benchmarks it wins, and the margin, are worth $150 more than a 256MB GTX, but I guess the market will tell us that.

No, I think you're reading too much into this. It's a supply vs. demand issue. Should be nothing more than that.

Munky, if you don't like the news, all I can suggest to you is that you don't read it.
It's a news item whether you like it or not, ATI or NV does not matter. This thread has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with nvidia. It's about ATI raising the MSRP on the x1800XT. That is all. Nothing more. No hidden agenda. No hidden meanings. Nothing. Done. Over.

The thing is:
Unless ATI raised BBA prices to vendors, and GPU prices to OEMs, what do they care what the retail price is?

I don't think this card can compete with the 512MB GTX, so this is a VERY strange move by ATI.

It's like WordPerfect saying "We know 99% of the market will be buying Word, so let's raise our price to closer to theirs!"

Since when should we agree that everything said in an article is true? Ever heard of misinformation?

Not trying to dis anyone of anything, but if it came from ATI I think it might be a bit shady. They've been feeding us lies for a while. I would like to say that it probably is a supply shortage, though, as they always have supply problems.

You can dwell on conspiracy theories all you want. I am reading what is right in front of my face and I suggest you do the same. All these theories for such a simple topic. Sheesh.
