ATI Radeon X800 PRO vs. EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT

ATI Radeon X800 PRO vs. EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT. i want to get a new video card but i dont know which one
If you are looking at <$400.00 I would probably go with the 6800GT. It has a much better price/performance ratio than a non-OC'ed/flashed X800 Pro.

The 6800GT also has better "futureproofness" if you believe in that idea, as it support SM 3.0 (none of the X800-series cards do). Right now most games don't use SM 3.0 but its' a sure bet that they will in not-to-distant future.

Keep that in mind, as I have an HIS Excalibur X800 XT IceQ II PE 256MB. If you are willing to spend $600.000 on a videocard than you can get a card like mine or the 6800 Ultra, which are about equal in terms of performance (there are trade-offs with either card).

Also, you didn't mention it, but you are probably talking about an AGP card, right? If you are talking PCI-e than you are most likely talking about a new mobo too. Than I would probably go for an nForce4 PCI-e SLI mobo and a single 6800 Ultra (PCI-e) videocard. Then, when your games start lagging (assuming your CPU is not the bottleneck) you can buy another 6800 Ultra and run in SLI for between a 30-85% performance boost. The performance gain depends upon what game, resolution, special effects such as AA and AF, ect. But you get the idea...

The 6800 GT is probably your best bet with SM 3.0 support and slightly better specifications. It also beats the X800 PRO in the majority of benchmarks.

If you have an LCD w/ DVI, go nVidia, if not, go ATi. It depends on how important 2D image quality is to you I suppose.

ATI actually has a slight advantage in DVI mode because of a better TMDS transmitter, according to Tom's Hardware. In their DVI tests ATI had better scores than nVidia, but not by much. Check out this article:

They are both great cards that should handle anything you can throw at them now. I have the X800 pro now and i am quite happy with it. It also depends on the games you play like stardust said. Since you only want to spend $399 I have to say get the nvidia with the doom 3 bundle. If you were going to get a X800 Pro it's worth it to get a VIVO model which would put you over $399.

My suggestion here

I'm looking for a 256mb 6800GT based on PCI-E. Is there a preferable brand, or what should I be looking for? Seems like there's a limited quantity of cards with these specs.

What? ATI has traditionally had the better 2d on both DVI and VGA, and many NV builders have often cheaped out on TMDS'es.

If you want the best 2d quality on NV, you usually have to stick to a couple of manufacturers: Leadtek, ASUS (I think), etc...

So you're telling me DVI on an nVidia card looks bad? Worse than ATi over analog?

No - how did we get comparing analog on ATI to DVI on Nvidia?

Check out this recent comparison at Tom's Hardware Guide. Yet again all ATI cards turn in 'exemplary' results, while the Nvidia cards, while improving, still fail at the highest resolutions (above 141 MHz). The Nvidia cards tested were from MSI, although I've seen similar results from eVga, PNY...

Supposedly Gainward and Leadtek have great 2d though.

I think the x800 Pro is more like a regular 6800; it performs so much slower than the GT although it is $400

The X800 Pro has the same fillrate as the 6800GT and has 256MB of DDR3 at 900 MHz. The 6800nu has much less fillrate, 1 less vertex processor (although you can unlock them usually) and 128MB of DDR at 700 MHz. The X800 Pro is much closer to the 6800GT than the 6800nu.
