ATI Radeon X600 SE HyperMemory or nVidia GeForce 6800 ?

I am thinking about canceling my prior computer order and getting a new system and these two cards are my option. The ATI costs an extra $40 and the nVidia costs $240 more. I am thinking about just getting what it comes with (128mb ATI Radeon X300 SE HyperMemory ) and ebaying it and just get the 6800 from Newegg. Any thoughts? I am hoping to play Doom 3 and possibly F.E.A.R. and Quake 4. Will the 6800 do this?

the 6800 will SUFFER in fear. Badly. as for DOOM3, it willbe fine. basically any game out right now BUT fear will run fine.

Hmmm, I guess you need to spend a fortune to play FEAR, looks like I won't be playing that then. What about running these cards on a 24" widescreen monitor?

not gonna happen at native resolutions(im guessing you own a 24" LCD, unless you are the extremely lucky few that bough that rare 100lb behemoth of a Sony Trinitron 24" widescreen CRT). anyway, you will ahve to play at a lower resolution which will force the lcd to interpolate making ti look worse than it should on a comparable crt.

for 24" gaming, really, go for 7800gtx. those were designed for above 16x12 gaming.

Hmmm, ok thanks for the input. Unsure if I want to sink the money into the 7800 at this point in time. I thank you for your response.

well, if i may suggest something, order onboard/cheapest card. sell it(the card) if it comes with a card,
get this quick. god knows how many are left and demand is VERY high for this card

then there is a auto flash utility stickied at the top of this video catagory to turn it into a x850xt or x850xtpe(depending on how fast you can oc it) and it wil be roughly the 5th fastest card in existance(x1800xt/7800gtx tie 1st, 7800gt 3rd x1800xl 4th, x850xtpe 5th)
When done, you should have no problem playing at high resolutions.

the conversion is almost 100% and it's the best value since the 9800se to 9800xt mod.

edit: nvm already out of stock, get this. same card, but retail bundle which means more accessories and software, albeit at a higher price. still worth it though.

edit: again slightly cheaper, same card.

Thanks for all the info mwmorph. Do you know what the requirements are for this card? I am wondering if it will fit into my P4 3.0ghz? I will have one PCi-express slot remaining. If I overclock it do I need an additional fan?

1. requirements will be fine. 3.0ghz is a bit slow but at high resolutions, it will be mostly graphics card limited and 3.0ghz will do yuo fine.
power is a completely different matter. dell usually uses pretty underpowered psus(im guessing dell from that 2405fpw thread). the x850xtpe uses power like anything. getting a decent 400-450w psu is advisible, but a 350w quality ps will probably run it fine if you dont have too many drives/extra cards installed.

Sort of getting tired of explaing this, so I will give a link, but basically the GTO^2 is now too close to the 7800gt to be a great value (within $40). The new card to get is the also unlockable Connect3D GTO. Link

Actually, it was a toss up for me between he Dell and Gateway. I ended up getting the Gateway with the P4 3.0ghz. Unsure of the power supply. I am assuming that I can replace that if necessary. I went with the new 21" LCD widescreen. I read some reviews for the Dell 20" and they said that it was a very good monitor but there was some ghosting while gaming. This was state on cnet.com. I can return my Gateway if I choose as where I bought it from they allow returns. I will have to see if it is going to give me what I want. My system will have 1gig RAM, the integrated video card (which I am obviously upgrading), & HD 7.1 audio so I won't be running anything too heavy.

1, 7800gt is stilll $335 for cheapest MAJOR Brand. Henerics will cost less, but what happens when something goes wrong as it probably will?

2 The Connect 3d will not oc nearly as well and probably wont hit XT speeds.

as for the gateway, i'd say buy it first and then decide if the pwoer supply needs tto be replaced first.
