ATI Radeon X1400(256MB) OR nVidia 7300(128MB)?

Hi,

Can someone kindly advise as to which one (amongst ATI Radeon X1400 or nVidia 7300) is a better graphics card.

They're both absolutely terrible. What are you trying to do with it?

If gaming is any part of the answer, then go directly to the FS/FT forums and find at least a 6600GT or X800 series card, which can be done for less than $50 if you're patient.

If you're just wanting something to run Windows Vista, 2d, and general video playback (non-HD), then the X1400/7300 will be at least usable.

My guess is it's for a laptop... Anyways, the X1400 is way better than the 7300.

zealit's guess is correct. The vendor from whom I am buying a laptop is offering me to choose either of these since the "bundle/package" which he is selling me includes either of these...

So should I go with X1400 with the understanding that X1400 is somewhat less terrible ?

If gaming is your bag, you can get an awesome deal on a Qosmio G25, they have a Geforce Go 6600, which will run rings around the X1400, along with a 17" screen, etc. Best deal you're likely to find on a gaming notebook. Go 6600 is fast enough to play most titles at medium settings, and older games in full stride.

Though .. if gaming is not the point, then the X1400 should suffice.

X1400 gets 14fps with NO AA @ 1440x900 in Battlefield 2, a fairly old game these days. Just atrocious.

Bleh, read more of the AT review, the X1400 can't even break 20fps in Far Cry, making it worthless even for 5 year old games.

I bought a new Dell e1505 couple mons ago with the 7300. The Inspiron 6400 is identical to 1505, except they offer the 7300 or X1400 (1505 only had X1300). From what I read the X1400 is faster, but don't know if it's very much faster. I didn't buy it to game with (see below), but for the heck of it I loaded some games. Here are my impressions of the 7300 with 1gig memory & CoreDuo @ 1.86mhz and 1280x800 LCD running at native resolution: (note no AA on)

Older Games:
Call of Duty & Call of Duty-United Offensive - maxed out with 8x AF runs smooth as glass.

Newer Games:
Call of Duty 2 - kinda slow & choppy with DX9 and medium settings. DX7 with settings maxed out & 4x AF smooth as glass (this is essentially same as original COD).

Far Cry - With medium settings & 2x AF runs VERY well, much better than I thought.

Half Life 2 - maxed setting runs smooth, but there are pauses at times which I cannot fix (this happened on my desktop when I first go it - upgrading ram to 1.5gig cured it)

Quake 4 - medium settings, no AF very smooth, although there may be times it'll slow down some, but nothing you can't play through.

Don't buy these to play the newest games - you'll be sorely disappointed if you try with everything maxed. But with low settings it'll do OK. I imagine the x1400 would do marginally better, but I don't think it'll be drastic.

From what you're saying, I'm thinking the Go 7300 is actually better than the X1400, which puts out just ghastly numbers. Less than 10fps in COD2 @ 1440x900, no AA.
