ATI Radeon problems, no NVIDEA ones

Ok I have just built up a new PC and having what seems to be a incompatability problem with my ATI Radeon 9000.

The specs are as follows,

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Mobo: Jetway N2PAP Ultra (Nforce 2)
RAM: 256mb ddr ram
Drives: DVD, CD-RW
Soundcard: Soundblaster Live! 5.1 Digital
OS: Win 2K Pro (SP4)
Also running with modem, NIC, 2 80mm case fan and a 300W PSU.

I can run my Nvidea GF 2 mx and GF 4 mx440 (8x AGP) fine with no problems at any AGP speed (8x or 4x) but if I try to use my Radeon 9000 128mb card at its maximum agp speed (4x) it will cause the system to hard lock-up after a few seconds normally I can hope to get 10 to 2 seconds time when in games before it locks up :S

If I set it to 2x using Smartgart it will run for maybe hours without the lock-ups. I have tried both new and older ATI drivers and a 400w PSU but no luck at all also strangly there are no problems with the Geforces.

I really don't want to use the GF4mx as it is nowhere near as good as the Radeon is. Additionally I get a very low 3DMark2001 SE score with the Geforce4 mx (only about 3500 3d marks!), obviously I ain't been able to test the Radeon but is this score quite low for the system?
(The Bios is set so that the AGP Apperture size is 128mb and fastwrites are disabled.)

Please help as its driving me nuts trying to find out why it is working so poorly.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I re-formatted after changing to the ATI Card and then reformatting once the Geforces were used.

Make certain fast writes is turned off in the bios and SMARGART, keep it on 4x, and enable video ram caching. I've had several compatability issues with ATI and NF2 and those settings fixed thing right up. I had drawing errors with the AIW with my SN45G that started from the moment the initial install completed and it booted to the desktop the first time even though I was using the settings I mentioned that worked with the 7000 and 8500le. They were so bad that just trying to open my computer resulted in the drawing error. I booted in safe mode, installed the chipset drivers then catalysts and everything was fine after that.

I had the same kind of problems when using Omega's drivers, but after I went with Cat 3.6's it all cleared up
